Briljant Hursey sets up Clash with World No 4 – Table Tennis England

The Anna Hursey of GB conquered Jieni Shao with a higher ranked to set up a collision with World No 4 Kuai-Man at the China Smash.

The Welsh Youngster (WR 76) remained on the role she built in three qualifying rounds when she came from behind against her Portuguese opponent Shao (WR 56).

It was Shao who made the stronger start, opened an 8-3 lead and although Hursey won six points on the spider, Shao thought the end of the game to take it 11-9.

Hursey (shown above with coach John Murphy) came back to take the second 11-5, won the first three points of the game and struggled clearly, and there was a similar pattern in the third that she led 5-1 and 8-2 and won 11-7.

The start of the fourth was tighter, but Hursey was only one point behind and four consecutive points of 6-5 gave her five match points-so-that only needed two.

HURSEY is guaranteed 90 World Ranking Points for reaching the last 32. Fourth seed and world no. 4 Kuai, on a home floor, will be a different prospect – but will also be wary of Hursey’s quality.

The competition is planned for 5.10 am UK on Wednesday at the Infinity Arena Showcourt. Follow the event on the WTT YouTube channel.
