BOSTON – The biggest fluctuations of Brian Cashman at the Handelsdeadline was about strengthening a struggling bull pen.
Almost a month and a half later that remains at best a work in progress.
“Some worked out more than others,” Cashman said on Friday about his deadline movements. ‘I certainly felt good [about] Improving the grid from the deadline, but again, some have influenced us in a more positive way and others still find their way. But we got some time to see if we can let it click. In the meantime, we just have to win our games, regardless of the performance. “
Both things flourished on Friday evening when Fernando Cruz, Devin Williams and David Bednar closed a 4-1 victory over the Red Sox. Cruz gave up a solo -home run in the seventh, but Williams worked around a lead -off single to withdraw the heart of the Red Sox order in the eighth before Bednar closed the door in the ninth.
“We have the pieces down there, we have the boys down there to close the game,” said Aaron Boone manager. “It’s just about doing it consistently.”
Of the three relievers that Cashman has brought in the deadline, only Bednar performed well while taking over the role of the closer. But it was a lot of Rockier for Camilo Doval, who came in on Friday with a 6.59 ERA in 16 games with the Yankees, while Jake Bird was relegated to Triple-A after giving up six earned points in just three games and has not returned since then.
For Doval there has been an adjustment period in a new role for the former Giants closer.
“Someone who tries to find himself here in a new environment,” said Cashman. “But he has trouble.”

The Yankees-Bullpen arrived on Friday with a 4.54 ERA in the season, which was the seventh highest figure in the Majors. When asked what gave him the confidence that unity could turn it around, quickly approaching with October, Cashman pointed to their track record.
“A lot of talent,” Cashman said. “Many guys have done great things in the course of many years. I know what their possibilities are. We will let it come true. But certainly hope.”
Aaron Judge’s Home Run Friday evening marked his 19th in the first inning this year and break the MLB record of one season.
The previous figure was held by Judge (in 2024) and Alex Rodriguez (in 2001).
Giancarlo Stanton started on Friday in the left field for the Green Monster and marked his fourth start in the position this season – the other three arrive in Houston last week with a smaller left field.
Jazz Chishholm Jr. Stable a few bases (and was also thrown away to steal third), giving him 30 in the season. He is shy two home runs for a 30/30 season.
