The Milwaukee Bewers won Game 2 of the NLDS on Tuesday evening of the Cubs, after three homeruns and a strong performance by Milwaukee’s Bullpen in what turned out to be a full -fledged bullpel game.
Just like Saturday afternoon, the game started quickly from both sides. The Cubs were the first to struck in the first half of the inning, because Aaron Ashby allowed a one-out single to Nico Hoerner before he threw four wide on Kyle Tucker. The next batter was Seiya Suzuki, and he promptly crushed a hanging switch at 130 meters to the left, giving Chicago a 3-0 lead.
That lead would not last long.
With Shota Imanaga on the Heuvel, the left -handed of the Cubs Jackson Chourio and Brice Turang eliminated back to start the evening. But the Brewers would put a rally out of two, with William Contreras and Christian Yelich both banging before Andrew Vaughn hit a high ball in the stands on the left to tie the position, 3-3 after one. Brand new ball game.
Ashby bounced back from his rugged first and picked up the first two zeros in the second, but he then threw four wide on Matt Shaw (with a few dubious calls from home plate referee Mike Estabrook) and received a base against Justin Turner, causing Pat Murphy to call Nick Mars in the ‘Pen. Mears let Hoerner fly away and the threat had disappeared.
Imanaga also recovered from his rough first and put the crew in order in the second, and in what could be considered a surprising move, Jacob Misiorowski came in to replace Mears for the third inning. Miz threw four wide on Suzuki with one, but he worked around the basic runner to get out of the inning.
In the second half of the inning, Imanaga again set Chourio and Turang to start the inning, but Contreras then crushed an undoubtedly 120 meter long Homer in the left-hand stands, making the crew a 4-3 for their first lead of the evening. After Yelich followed with a single, Imanaga was removed and Cubs’ Closer Daniel Palencia entered. Palencia ensured that Vaughn was taken out and was out of the inning.
Miz continued to impress in the fourth inning, had two strikeouts and worked around another run to close with his second scoreless inning.
In the fourth, Palencia remained in the game and brought himself into trouble, because Caleb Durbin was hit by a throw with one before Joey Ortiz hit a single through the middle, causing runners on first and second base with two. Chourio then followed with Milwaukee’s second Three-Run Homer from the game to the middle, which extended the lead to 7-3.
Misiorowski worked around a Leadoff single van Hoerner in the fifth-including an impressive jumping catching catcher of Sal Frelick in error area-to mark a scoreless inning in what turned out to be a solid playoff debut for the 23-year-old right-handed. Miz eventually threw three scoreless frames, allowing only one single and two free runs, while he had four strikeouts to put himself in line for the victory. Oh, and he hit 31 times more than 160 km/hour, including two throws of more than 160 km/hour. According to Sarah, those 31 pitches of more than 100 km per hour are along the highest ever by a pitcher in the Pitch-Tracking era (since 2008).
Drew Pomeranz and Colin Rea together ensured that the Brewers got four wide with two out in the fifth, and Chad Patrick then came in to replace Misiorowski in the sixth. Patrick continued the great work and switched off a few three in a 1-2-3 inning.
The Bewers again came to a rally of two in the sixth against Rea, when Ortiz cut an Infield single before Chourio hit a hard grounder to Dansby Swanson a short distance. Swanson made a nice action on the ball, but his throwing to the second base to get Ortiz went next to, so that both Ortiz and Chourio could move and brought a few runners into scoring position with two. Rea, however, a batter later escaped the jam and provided a grounder from Turang.
Jared Koenig came in for Patrick in the seventh and put the Cubs in order, while the Brewers fell 1-2-3 in the seventh, although Yelich did hit a single before Vaughn hit a double game.
After Koenig had scored his fourth zero in four batters to start the eighth, Murphy went to Trevor Megill, who then caused a few catches, giving the crew only three zeros from a 2-0 NLDS lead.
Frelick got four wide to start the eighth, but was quickly eliminated after a double play from Durbin. After Blake Perkins subsequently hit a single, Ortiz closed the frame with a catch ball, and it was up to Abner Uribe to close things in the ninth.
Uribe left no doubt about it in this way and turned out three stroke in what a fast ninth inning was, when Milwaukee succeeded in taking a 2-0 lead in the series.
Chourio, Contreras and Ortiz each took a few hits in the victory, while Yelich added three hits. For the pitching staff, Mears, Misiorowski, Patrick, Koenig, Megill and Uribe made together for 7 1/3 Shutout-Inings after Ashby’s unfavorable start, allowing only one single and two free running (all of Miz) with 10 strikeouts.
The crew will try to win the best-of-five series on Wednesday evening, while they go to Wigley Field. Neither of the teams have announced another starter. The first pitch in it is planned for 16:08 CT on TBS, HBO Max and the Brewers Radio Network.
