Brouwers ShortStop Joey Ortiz is on the way to an MRI on his left hamstring after leaving the match of this afternoon, manager Pat Murphy told reporters (including Mlb.com’s Adam McCalvy). The second -year Infielder stopped after he finished a ground ball and immediately preferred the back of his left leg. It certainly had the appearance of a hamstring tribe that required an injured list -stint, although that would only be official tomorrow.
Andraw Monasterio completed the game at ShortStop. Apart from an appearance in the early season of Vinny Capra (who is no longer in the organization), Monasterio is the only player other than Ortiz who starts a game at ShortStop. He is the most likely option to step into a daily role when Ortiz goes to the IL. A career .243/.318/.336 Hitter, Monasterio has added only 72 record performances this season in 43 games.
The Bewers have no other natural shortstops on the 40-man schedule. Call triple-a shortstop Freddy Zamora would require a 40-man movement. Oliver DunnWho is on the 40-man, which has received shortstopwork in the minors and can be recalled as an emergency option for the bank. It is unlikely that Milwaukee the routines of Brice or Caleb Durbin By moving them to Shortstop every day, but both players can go there as a replacement of the late game if the Brewers Monasterio remove for Pinch-hitting or injuries.
The victory of Milwaukee over the Cubs today pushed their lead in the NL Central back to seven games. They are five and a half games free from the Phillies for the top seeds in the National League. That gives them the pillow to endure an Ortiz absence, unless he suffered a considerable effort to threaten his willingness for the late season.
On the other side of the comparison, Milwaukee has a few players approaching. Rhys Hoskins A rehabilitation assignment started on Tuesday in Triple-a Nashville. Hoskins has been sidelined since July 6 with a sprain of the left thumb. That injury forced the brewers to evoke Andrew Vaughn From triple-a. They would certainly not have provided Vaughn in a .320/.386/.578 tear with dramatically improved plate discipline statistics compared to his stint in the early season with the White Sox.
Vaughn has pureed his way to an everyday role. Christian Yelich continues to get a lot of designated hitter work. Even if the brewers felt that Yelich could wear a larger workload in the left field, Isaac Collins has played far too well to leave the line -up. It leaves Hoskins without a clear path to playing time as soon as it is ready to return, which can be within the following week or two.
Hoskins can be banned to part-time first base and DH work. The veteran started a good start to the season and hit until the end of May .276/.374/.475. He was submitted to a .170/.269/.330 line in the next five weeks prior to the injury. The Bewers would not have considered replacing him with Vaughn despite the slump, but the injury and the performance of the latter changed the calculus.
Robert Gasser Has rehabilitated in triple-a in recent weeks. The Lefty works back from the elbow surgery of last June. Gasser comes after the recovery after throwing four scoreless innings and the construction of 52 fields on Tuesday. He may only need one or two more Minor League Start. According to the MLB.com injury trackerThe Brewers weigh whether they should keep him up as a starter or kick him on the bull pen awaiting his probably postseason role.
Gasser was impressed by an ERA of 2.57 about his first five main class start -start last summer. The Bewers undoubtedly consider him a long -term starter, but have enough rotation depth that it is unlikely that he will get a runway this season. Gasser still has a full slate of Minor League options, so that the Brewers could keep him in Nashville, even after he returns from the injured list (although they have to erase a place for him on the 40-man schedule).
