Ludovic Ajorque scored a brace to seal a 2-0 win for Brest over Marseille, who made a losing start under Habib Beye.
Beye was appointed Roberto De Zerbi’s successor on Thursday, but despite a tough second half in which Mason Greenwood missed a penalty, he was unable to make a perfect start to life at his new club.
Brest made a good start, with Ajorque standing in front of his marker and glancing Hugo Magnetti’s move past a helpless Geronimo Rulli in the 10th minute.
Daouda Guindo and Greenwood saw the chances beg at both ends before Ajorque rose highest to meet Magentti’s beautiful curling throw and hit his header via the left post in the 29th minute.
And Ajorque could have scored a hat-trick before half-time after slipping between Marseille defenders, but his powerful shot deflected off the crossbar.
Marseille improved after the break, with Quinten Timber forcing Gregoire Coudert into a low stop before they had a golden chance from the spot in the 82nd minute.
Guindo caught Greenwood awkwardly from behind in the penalty area, but after winning the spot-kick, the striker smashed his spot-kick to Coudert’s right, and it was a good height for the goalkeeper to push clear and protect his clean sheet.
