Harness Racing Breeders will see more money flowing their way into a change in Vicbred First-win bonus tests that will come into force in Victoria from next week (13 October).
Feulennominators now receive 15 percent of each First-Win Bonus, an increase of five percent. The increase effectively gives breeders an extra $ 700 every time a girl earns a $ 7000 bonus.
Owners (80 percent) and trainers (5 percent) will retain their existing share, while the five percent previously focused on studmasters and five percent on drivers instead goes to foal nominators.
Harness Racing Victoria CEO Matt Isaacs said that the decision was about strengthening the breeding base of the industry.
“This change is moving more money in the pockets of breeders and recognizes the importance of encouraging breeding in Victoria to reverse trends and to ensure that our trainers and drivers have many future champions in their hands,” Isaacs said.
He said that the move was a supplement to the announcement of $ 2.75 million to government financing in vicbrede vouchers and a further reinforcement of the dedication of Victoria to breeders.
The proposal was endorsed during the August meeting of the Harness Racing Advisory Council, which brings relatives, independent members and HRV council and personnel together.
“I am very proud of the adult way in which our stakeholders have discussed and resolved the bonus tests of the first win, so that an industry-first perspective is used to ensure that the returns of the participants have the maximum advantage,” Isaacs said.
Harness breeders Victoria President John Coffey welcomed the change and said it was a “positive step forward” for an industry struggling with decreasing foal crops.
“Foal gain figures have fallen and putting extra money in the pockets of Foal -Nominators will be a positive step forward for the breeding industry, which encourages breeders to invest again in future generations and to turn those trends,” Coffey said.
Victorian trainers and chairman of the Drivers Association Anthony Butt said that the redistribution made the right balance.
“It is crucial for the industry supported by breeders, especially with many trainers and drivers who are also breeders and owners,” said Butt.
“It is nice that trainers have retained their allocation of five percent. It acknowledges their important investments and time in the horse. We understand the need to prioritize foalennominators over drivers and studmasters to encourage the breeding of our next racing horses.”
