Sales were boosted by several updates during the Breeders’ Cup World Championships from October 31 through November. 1 at Del Mar, highlighted by Shisospicy’s dominant victory in the Prevagen Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint. The three-year-old daughter of Mitole made history, becoming the first three-year-old filly to win the Turf Sprint against older male rivals.
She is cataloged as a racing or broodmare (Hip 147) and will be consigned by Gainesway, agent, who will get a second chance to send the filly through the Fasig sales ring as they also sold her as a yearling at the 2023 Fasig-Tipton July select yearling sale where she was picked up by top pinhookers Hartley/DeRenzo Thoroughbreds for $200,000 – a price tag much less than expected on Monday evening.
Gainesway general manager Brian Graves purchased Shisospicy as a foal at the 2023 Keeneland January Sale of Horses of All Ages for $100,000.
“Our history with Shisospicy goes way back,” Graves said. “I bought her as a foal myself for our pinhooking partners. The main reason I was attracted to her as a foal is because she was beautiful. She was just an absolute stunner, long-legged… exactly the definition of physically great. Long, beautiful neck and sloping shoulder and big hip. We took her to the auction in July where she was loved and well vetted.
“Her win at Kentucky Downs [Music City Stakes] was really impressive, and what she did [Saturday in the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint] was an elite performance. She is the only three-year-old filly to win this race in history. She is at the pinnacle of her division. We’ll see what happens here with the sale.”
Boyd Browning Jr., president and CEO of Fasig-Tipton, was equally excited to offer the special filly at their prestigious sale.
“It was a breathtaking performance that she put on,” Browning said. “She has put together an exceptional group of horses. It was a double sweep because we have her mother.” [Mischief Galore] also for sale. I’m so happy with her connections and the man who owns her mother.
“And I can’t leave out Ag Bullet, who had a great race and finished second. We couldn’t be happier going into tomorrow.”
Taylor Made Sales Agency will offer the mother of Shisospicy – Mischief Galore (Hip 160), pregnant with 2021 champion male sprinter Jackie’s Warrior. The 9-year-old Into Mischief mare is mother of two racing-age foals, both winners.
Ag Bullet (hip 183) made it a female exacta in Turf Sprint, finishing a game second behind Shisospicy. Ag Bullet is no stranger to competing against the boys, as she won the Grade 1 Jaipur Stakes at Saratoga Race Course last summer and finished third in the Turf Sprint last year. The 5-year-old mare became Twirling Candy’s top earner after her effort on Saturday, amassing more than $2.9 million in earnings during her illustrious career. She will be offered as a racing or broodmare by Mill Ridge Sales, agent.
Another big update occurred on Oct. 31 when top 2-year-old Ted Noffey won the FanDuel Breeders’ Cup Juvenile presented by Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance, adding a third Grade 1 win to his resume and his dam, Streak of Luck (Hip 220), further elevating her time in the sales ring. The 10-year-old mare is offered in foal to top sire Not This Time by Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent of Aaron and Marie Jones.
“He’s 4-for-4, he’s won three Class 1 races,” Browning said of Ted Noffey. “She’s a great horse, a beautiful mare [Streak of Luck] is clearly pregnant with one of the most popular stallions in the world: Not This Time. It’s a very, very exciting package. The mare is still very young. The potential there is great.”
Rounding out the family of Breeders’ Cup-winning products is Hip 188 – Attabe, a 5-year-old half-sister to 2025 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile winner Nysos, in foal to 2022 Horse of the Year Flightline. She is shipped by Woods Edge Farm, agent.
This year’s sale offers a first look at many weaner offspring of sires from the first crop, including Cody’s Wish, Horse of the Year 2023. The son of Curlin spent his first year at Darley near Lexington for an advertised fee of $75,000. He won consecutive editions of the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile at ages 4 and 5.
Foals from Elite Power from Juddmonte Farm, which was voted men’s sprinter champion in 2022 and 2023, are also up for grabs. Elite Power, also a son of Curlin, won consecutive editions of the Breeders’ Cup Sprint to highlight his championship campaigns. He faced an advertised compensation of $50,000 his first year.
“It’s always fun to see these first-year bulls,” Browning said. “This year there is a very good group again. They will be well received, as always.”
At last year’s auction, 178 horses sold for $96,423,500, including private sales. The average price was $541,705 with a median of $250,000.
The top-priced horse was McKulick, who brought home $6 million from Narvick International for Grand Stud from the ELiTE consignment. Twenty-six horses sold for $1 million or more.
The sale starts Monday at 4 p.m
