Why did Pakistan call for a boycott of India?
Since the criticism leveled at the Bangladesh cricket team during the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup, Pakistan went against the International Cricket Council and said they will not take the field against their arch-rivals India for the group stage match of the flagship tournament. The match will take place in Colombo, Sri Lanka, a neutral venue between India and Pakistan.
It is believed that the government of Pakistan, in solidarity with Bangladesh, has stopped the boycott of the match against India. The government announced the decision days after a meeting between Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Mohsin Naqvi and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. It was earlier reported that the competition call for the boycott of India was heavily influenced by Naqvi, who is also the country’s Home Minister.
Mohsin Naqvi can take a U-turn?
Although from the end of PCB there was no clear explanation. The cricket board was silent on their own thoughts about their match with India on February 15. In a first step, the International Cricket Council urged the PCB to reconsider their decision as the boycott call could create a series of problems for Pakistan cricket.
Even after the Council’s request, PCB has not made any clear statement in this regard. The 2026 T20 World Cup has now started as scheduled. To resolve the issue, ICC representatives meet with the PCB people to discuss the situation and find a way to resolve it. According to the latest claims, Pakistan may change its decision and release an official statement ahead of the highly-rated match.
Salman Mirza also showed a positive approach
On the other hand, Pakistani fast bowler Salman Mirza stated to the press that they are not worried about the uncertainty of their match against India; they will prepare according to the fixtures.
“We are preparing for the entire World Cup. We will play according to the team we have to play. It will be the government’s decision. We will do what we are told,” Mirza told reporters. Pakistan will take on the United States in their second Group A match in Colombo on Tuesday evening.
If the new reports and indications are to be believed, Pakistan is all set to face India as per the scheduled date.
