Braves Select JHANCARLOS LARA, DFA Jonathan Ornelas

De Braves announced on Friday that they selected Righty’s contract JHANCARLOS LARA From Triple-A Gwinnett and designated Infront Jonathan Ornelas For the assignment to open a place on the 40-man schedule. Right -handed Dane Dunning Gwinnett was chosen to erase a place on the active schedule.

Lara, 22, has posted ugly Minor League numbers this year, but continues to intrigue scouts because of the quality of his rough things. It is 98.5 mph with his four-seizer in Triple-A and connects the field with a slider/cutter that varies from the top 80 to low 90 and generates many Whiffs. As is often the case with powerful arms of this nature, the command is a continuous struggle for the 6’3 ″, 195-pound Lara.

In 68 2/3 innings between Double-A and Triple-A this season, Lara delivered a horrible 7.73 run average. He has actually been better in the higher of those two levels and worked for a moderately better 6.53 ERA. Lara raged more than a third of his opponents in Gwinnett, but published walks with a brutal clip of 19.8% for each of this year’s Minor League stops.

Despite the bad command, Lara is still 20th under Braves-prospects in Baseball America, 21st on MLB.com and 25th on Fangraphs. Atlanta should add him to the 40-man schedule outside season this season to protect him against the Rule 5 trek anyway, so he gets an early promotion to the Majors and gets his first taste of the big league-opposition. Lara is clearly still a work in progress, but now that he is on 40-man Roster, the Braves have for at least three years to even get a reasonable order from him. He starts the 2026 season with a full slate of three Minor League options available for the Major League Club.

The 25-year-old Ornelas came to the Braves in May in a money change with the Rangers. He was also designated for assignment in Texas. The Righty-Swinging Utilityman hit 2-out-4 with a few singles in his only two games with Atlanta. He spent the rest of his time, because it can trade in in Gwinnett, where he .193/.279/.325 cut to the plate in 333 trips.

Ornelas is only 11-out-53 in a small monster of 58 main class plate performances, which leads to a general .208/.263/.245 battle line in the Majors. He placed considerable songs in the lower minors, but has struggled every year since he had bumped to Triple-A. However, he is a plus runner who can play quality defense on Shortstop, third base and second base – and he has also received some repetitions in midfield in recent seasons.

Now that he has been designated for assignment, Ornelas goes to outright distance statements or is released. He is in his last Minor League option, which will damage his chances of being picked up by another club, because he would have to break the camp on the main class schedule next spring or would otherwise be designated again for the assignment.
