My yoga mat never leaves my house. He always believed me – that man was a real mat over the city.
But nowadays he gets his representatives at home. Now I never actually bring my own mat to class. Why? The rational is impossible: I don’t want the extra.
It is difficult enough to appear to class. The feeling that it is a sport (or chore) with equipment in tow is getting part of the joy from a modest practice. I just want to show up when myself and trust the process. Moreover, they don’t charge extra for that, you know?
Of course, I have something special for my home yogamat, but when I reach a black -borrowed number, I know exactly what I’m going to get. Eucalyptus cleaner blends with old sock and toe funk to create a neutral aromatic experience. The porous rectangle has a few worn places of decades of Neerwaartse Hond, which get a decent hand and foot on the ground for the sweaty, smooth, starting yogi.
These are things I expect from my practice, and a boat that I am no longer prepared to rock. After all, if I try to bind that leg today, I want to know that I have a little extra purchase. I am here for that consistency, Fam.
There is also a common bond between Mat Crediters. Nobody is better in this studio. Yes, we can practice a little differently, but we all sweat on the same surface. That is the kind of companionship that I need in my yoga class, and a reminder that potential fungal intervention will ultimately just bring us closer together (or that we can at least share treatment plans).
However, it is my ultimate non-Attachment practice to bring a mat to class than just an explanation. I am loose. There is really no better way to embody that mantra than to leave my equipment at home.
I settle in my last Savasana and think deep about the scents that are now settling in my T-shirt. They are me, and I am them – a circle unbroken. When the teacher finishes her last words, the mat returns to his place on the wall, lives in harmony with the others until we meet again, or I am forced to use the one who is now under the man next to me. Is that … her hair?
