We’re entering a silly season in the NHL, with the Olympic roster freeze lifted on February 22 and the March 6 trade deadline soon to follow. As all hockey fans know, the coming weeks will be full of rumors, transactions and surprises, although it can sometimes be difficult to distinguish between what is real and what is not.
That’s especially true of a recent rumor making the rounds, one that seems to be gaining traction whether or not it’s plausible: Sergei Bobrovsky for the Edmonton Oilers.
With some excitement already circulating around the idea, Geoff Hannah of NHL Trade Rumors explained how the Panthers and Oilers could make a deal work.
Hanna wrote:
“The trade chatter linking the Florida Panthers and Edmonton Oilers is quickly turning into legitimate bluster. With Florida potentially slipping out of the playoff race, preliminary talks have taken place regarding a blockbuster trade that would send soon-to-be UFA goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky to the Oil Country.
We initially thought that a third-party broker could launder this money up to $2.5 million, but that loophole has officially been closed. To make this franchise-altering move a reality, Edmonton will need to immediately take on a 50% cap hit of $5 million, which means bringing in a marquee player like Andrew Mangiapane to make the math work. Because Florida is taking on Mangiapane’s salary to simplify the math for Edmonton, they will be taking the draft capital that would otherwise have gone to an outside agent. In this strict two-team framework, Edmonton will have to part with their 2027 first-round pick, a 2026 third-round pick and a high-end prospect like Matthew Savoie or Beau Akey.
The 37-year-old, of course, is a UFA who was signed in the seventh and final season of the seven-year, $70 million contract to play as a UFA with the Panthers in 2019. Like the rest of his team, Bobrovsky has had a weak 2025-26 season thus far, posting a 21-17-1 record to go with a 3.13 goals-against average, .871 save percentage and three shutouts in 39 starts.
The problem with Sergei Bobrovsky for the Oilers
Is the thought of plucking a two-time Stanley Cup champion and a two-time Vezina Trophy-winning veteran goaltender from the team that crushed your dreams in each of the last two Stanley Cup Finals intriguing? Of course it is. But there is a lot standing in the way of this actually happening.
If General Manager Stan Bowman were to pull the trigger on, say, Bobrovsky with a 50% retention for a first, third and top prospect, he would limit his ability to make other moves in more ways than one.
Taking on a $5 million salary would, as Hannah noted, require Edmonton to cut Andrew Mangiapane’s $3.6 million to become cap compliant. Then add in the loss of three of their more valuable future assets, and the Oilers have almost nothing left to improve the rest of the roster.
Adding a top-nine forward and/or an impact defenseman was at the top of Bowman’s priority list, and while Bobrovsky would certainly improve a position they’ve struggled with for years, they’ve already made their bed with the trade for Tristan Jarry.
That said, if Edmonton doesn’t like what’s available on offense and defense, doubling down on goaltending could be an option — though it would feel like a last resort, and convincing Florida to throw in the towel this season and agree to such a deal would be just as difficult.
