We are not the only ones who are quite partial for the BMW M240i xDrive. After all, it is a relatively compact coupé powered by a straight sixth turbo vehicle – and you hardly have to remind that such cars are there nowadays few. But as John H pointed out when it launched, the model was a significant improvement compared to its predecessor, dynamically, if not so much in the look department. It was more expensive, certainly – but probably a good value for a car that had considerably more power than an entry -level Cayman.
Well, the improvements keep coming. As part of his autumn updates for this year, BMW says that the M240i – and the M340i and M440i – also received an updated version of its muscular B58 3.0 -Liter petrol engine. The reasoning for the update probably has more to do with efficiency transitions than outright performance (the CO2 emissions of the newest coupe have fallen from 200 g/km to 183 g/km, with a proportional improvement in fuel consumption) but there is more power, and who are we to make with that?

BMW does not waste time to explain how it struggled for another 18 hp and 37 pound torque of the unit, although, given the very alignment of the nature, it probably doesn’t have to be. In any case, it is now assessed on 392 hp (with 12 hp supplied by the 48V Mild -Hybrid system) and 398LB FT, that the M240i sees quite insistently on the 400 hp door of the RS3 -a car that costs £ 61k. BMW UK has not yet confirmed a price change (the updated variants start production in November), but for now the coupé is priced from £ 50k. That is much less.
Admittedly, BMW claims no improvement of performance in practice for the M240i-er is still claimed that in 4.3 seconds it should do 0-62 MPH in the M340i and M440i, the upgrade considers the upgrade that is significant enough for a 0.1 second improvement, which apparently makes improvement. Great news for fans of the salon. But then it’s really great news, really. Updates elsewhere are demonstrably less important, although everyone who buys a new M5 will now notice that they (together with all other 5-series) are now being supplied with a Jashak on the B-Stijl Trim. Sometimes it’s the little things, right?
