Blue Jays: Why Kazuma Okamoto should be the full-time third baseman

As the Blue Jays approach their first spring game, fans are becoming endeared to the newest member of the roster, Kazuma Okamoto. Highlights have already emerged of the 29-year-old Japanese phenom hitting home runs in live at-bats in the backfields of the Jays’ Player Development Complex in Dunedin, creating massive hype for his eventual MLB debut.

Manager John Schneider has made it clear that Ernie Clement will assume the majority of the second base duties after a remarkable postseason run in 2025, with Addison Barger moving to an outfield role in 2026. This leaves Okamoto as the sensible option to move into third full-time. Some might say he should contribute in a platoon role, throwing exclusively left-handed due to his proven ability against lefties in the NPB, though his numbers against righties are nothing to scoff at.

In 2025 alone, he registered a .295 AVG and a 186 WRC+ against right-handers with 9 home runs (15 total) combined with a 1.31 K/BB rate. Relatively, Alejandro Kirk had a remarkable 1.21 K/BB rate against right-handers in 2025, and he is known for his great plate discipline. Okamoto has been a consistent, versatile force in the NPB for a decade, demonstrating elite contact, power and above-average plate discipline. Offensively, there are reasons to believe he will succeed at third base full-time.

The more pressing question remains how he will handle the position defensively.

From Matt Chapman to Isiah Kiner-Falefa and, most recently, Clement, the Jays have deployed elite defense at the hot corner, and it’s unlikely Okamoto will be able to replicate that. That’s not to say he’s an undersized defender by any means, as he’s already shown off his soft hands during groundball drills at Spring Training.

He posted a respectable .985 fielding percentage at third base last year, and while he’s performing better as a first baseman, the playing time won’t present itself as well. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. will probably hold this position for the next fourteen years. In the past two seasons, Okamoto was the primary third baseman (2021-2022). He won the NPB Central League Gold Glove award at first base in 2024, where he will be the backup behind Guerrero.
Okamoto has officially been added to Team Japan for the WBC, meaning he will spend some time away from the Jays during Spring Training, making his first few weeks of camp vital to his MLB development. We’ve already seen him work on his defense in the hot corner with Carlos Febles, and he also took the new Jays starter Cody Ponce deep into live-at-bats a few days ago.

It looked like Kazuma Okamoto was bringing Cody Ponce deep to left field. Some discussion behind the screen. George Springer and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. lobbied for the home run. Okamoto called it wrong. #BlueJays

In addition to his skills on the field, he has described himself to reporters as very “masculine” and “serious”, with a great sense of humor as well. The Jays have welcomed him with open arms and he seems like the perfect personality type to fit in the clubhouse and go to work every day to perfect his craft.

Schneider has stated that he wants Okamoto to play for the Jays first Spring training game next Saturday, the 21st, against the Philadelphia Phillies, eager to see his first action against American pitching since dominating in the 2023 WBC.

Fans should have overwhelming reasons to believe Okamoto will soon become a household name in the MLB. His presence was already felt during the first few days of camp, with many media outlets following his every move. While he may not be Shohei Ohtani or Yoshinobu Yamamoto, he was the captain of one of the most popular teams in Japan, the Yomiuri Giants, as a representation of his leadership and achievements. It won’t be long before we see “Young General” play the Rogers Center to a sold-out crowd.
