The Blue Jays Place Catcher Alejandro Kirk On the 7-day brain list this morning, according to a report from Arden Swelling of Sportnet. Catcher Ali Sanchez is selected in the grid to replace Kirk. No accompanying 40-man movement was needed for Sanchez, because the Blue Jays had an open space on their 40-man selection to work with.
Kirk took a mistake of his face mask during the second inning of yesterday, and apparently he was shaken enough by the incident that the Blue Jays chose to place him on the injured list for the following week. The severity of Kirk’s symptoms are not known at the moment and it is unclear whether he has a longer stay on the injured list than a minimum stint of seven days. Anyway, losing Kirk for some time is a big blow. The 26-year-old is in the middle of a recoplant season where he succeeded in combining the above-average attack that he previously offered in his career with the loyal defense he has provided in more recent season. He cuts .304/.361/.413 (117 WRC+) About 88 games for Toronto This year he received top markers from advanced statistics on all aspects of his defense behind the record.
With Kirk out of use, the Blue Jays will have to turn to a combination of Tyler Heineman and Sanchez. The strong game of Toronto in recent weeks has offered the club the best record in not only East, but all baseball. With a 6.5 game lead in the division over the Yankees, the Jays have the advantage of a breathing room while waiting for Kirk to recover. It certainly helps all the worries about Kirk’s status that Heineman enjoyed this year from a Breakout season as a primary backup of Kirk. In 37 games, the 34-year-old has posted a sensational .330/.394/.495 Slash Line (149 WRC+) to go with strong defense numbers behind the plate. Van Heineman cannot reasonably be expected to keep that production forever considering his towering .391 Babip, but even a big step back would still make him a worthy fill -in option for the Jays while Kirk is out.
As far as Sanchez is concerned, it will be the second Stint of the 28-year-old with the Blue Jays this year after he appeared in five games earlier this season. Sanchez has never offered much production with the bat and only cuts .176/.217/.222 More than 43 career competitions in the Majors since he made his debut in 2020. Sanchez makes up for this poor offensive production with highly respected defense behind the record, and should, however, be a backup of the short term for the time.
With Toronto clearly in Win-Now position and the trade deadline in just a few days, it is not outside the realm of the possibility that the Jays can consider a movement behind the plate if they think Kirk could experience an extensive absence. Old friend Danny Jansen It is said that it is available in the event that the Rays decide to sell off in the coming days and is already quite familiar with many of the pitchers of Toronto after seven seasons in the organization, although such an acquisition would probably only make sense if the Blue Jays would have expected them for a long time without Kirk without a kirk. If Kirk can return to a relatively short order, upgrading other parts of the schedule, such as the start rotation, should certainly be a better use of the club’s resources.
