No one should understand both realities better than the Toronto Blue Jays, who lost again to the Dodgers on Thursday night.
That’s when outfielder Kyle Tucker, the top remaining free agent on the market and one of the top players available this season, reportedly agreed to a four-year contract with the Dodgers, choosing the back-to-back World Series champions over both the Blue Jays and New York Mets.
Blue Jays can’t beat the Dodgers during the season or offseason
There are 29 franchises and fan bases in Major League Baseball that currently hate the Dodgers. They win all the time, they outspend everyone, and they’ve taken the title of “Evil Empire” from the New York Yankees of the old George Steinbrenner era.
But there can’t be a team or fanbase that should hate them more than the Blue Jays.
Two years ago, when Toronto thought it had a shot at landing Shohei Ohtani, the Dodgers stepped up and signed him to a $700 million contract. The Blue Jays finished in second place in those free agency sweepstakes.
This past season, the Blue Jays seemingly eliminated the Dodgers from the World Series, taking a 3-2 series lead with two games at home. They entered the ninth inning of Game 7 with a one-run lead, but lost in devastating fashion.
Now they lost again to them off the field in the Tucker sweepstakes.
It’s a huge win for Los Angeles and another big loss for Toronto when it comes to competing with the Dodgers.
Toronto could still re-sign Bo Bichette, but Tucker would be their most important asset. But there’s just no competition with the Dodgers during the season or offseason. No one knows that better than the Blue Jays.
