The Milwaukee Brewers made Tyler Black the first Canadian selected in the 2021 MLB Draft when they drafted him 33rd overall out of Wright State University. He was ranked 57th on MLB Pipeline’s draft prospect rankings in a class loaded with pitching talent.

Black was drafted as a second baseman despite being 6 feet tall and weighing just under 200 pounds. Scouts rated him as an above-average hitter, solid fielder and deceptively good baserunner after an impressive collegiate career that included being named Horizon League Freshman of the Year in 2019.

The Brewers named Black their Co-Minor League Player of the Year in 2023, joining current star outfielder Jackson Chourio. The Canadian Baseball Network also honored Black that year with the Randy Echlin Award as the top Canuck hitter in the minor leagues.

Black made his MLB debut the following year with Milwaukee as a 23-year-old. He started six games at first base and made ten appearances as a design hitter.

Season 2025

Black entered 2025 competing for a spot on the Brewers’ Opening Day roster, but quickly found himself derailed by injuries. He missed the start of spring training due to a back injury and subsequently required surgery on his right hand to repair a broken hamate bone.

After a lengthy recovery lasting several months, Black had a brief stint in the Arizona Complex League before returning to Triple-A Nashville, where he spent most of 2024 after failing to stay in the MLB. He hit .243/.369/.360 with four home runs and 34 RBIs in 61 games. He posted an impressive 16.2% walk rate in his 265 plate appearances.

The Brewers called up Black for five games in 2025, and he recorded two extra base hits and five walks in 13 at-bats before being demoted again. He made two appearances in the outfield during that time, perhaps hinting at his future role.

Black finished the year as the Brewers’ 26th best prospect.

Looking ahead to 2026

Black was recently named to Team Canada’s 2026 World Baseball Classic roster, allowing him to play for his country and shine on a global stage. He should feature prominently in the lineup regardless of where he lines up defensively.

Once the tournament concludes, Black will look to stay healthy and establish himself in the Major League full-time with the Brewers in 2026. He will most likely compete for one of the team’s final bench spots.

Black’s future right now may look as a super-utility player who bounces between spots in the field as well as the corner outfielder. However, he is still only 25 and should be given more opportunities to establish himself as a quality Major League player.
