Blue Jays: Arizona Fall League Game 17 and 18 recap

The Glendale Desert Dogs have split their final two games in Arizona Fall League action.

On Wednesday, they defeated the Mesa Solar Sox 6-4 to move to 5-12 on the season. Unfortunately, that was met with a loss on Thursday, as they fell 10-5 to the Scottsdale Scorpions to move to 5-13.

Let’s see how these two games went.

Wednesday match

Starting with Wednesday’s win, two talents from the Toronto Blue Jays participated in this game: Infielder Cutter Coffey and pitcher Kelena Sauer. Coffey’s first at-bat came in the bottom of the second inning, when he flew to center field. In the bottom of the fourth, he walked to bring on two runners, then later scored on a wild pitch.

That was the last time Coffey was on base. In the bottom of the fifth, he hit a fly ball to center field with a runner on second base, and the runner was thrown out as he tried to advance to third base. This was Coffey’s last at bat of the game, as the game lasted only seven innings.

Sauer pitched in the fourth inning. The first batter he faced, Tommy White, hit a lead-off single. He struck out the next batter, but a triple was hit to score a run, and then a sacrifice fly to score a second. Sauer got a lineout to end the inning.

Diving deeper into the statistics, Coffey put just two balls in play. His catch in the second inning came off the bat at 90.8 mph, while the catch that led to a double play came off the bat at 77.8 mph.

Sauer threw 11 four-seam fastballs, averaging 90.1 mph. It also generated one whiff on seven total swings. His changeup was the only other pitch that sparked a whiff, coming after two total swings. Overall, Sauer had a whiff of 15%

Thursday game

Two Blue Jays players were involved in Wednesday’s 10-5 loss to the Desert Dogs: Josh Kasevich and Edward Duran. Kasevich hit the no, while Duran batted eighth.

In the first inning, Kasevich singled, but stranded on first base. In the next inning, Duran hit his third triple on the season, which is impressive considering he’s a catcher. He scored thanks to a single by Patrick Clohisy.

Leading from the top of the third inning was Kasevich, who lined a shot to right in a quiet inning for the Desert Dogs. Duran then led off the top of the fourth and grounded in a groundout. Kasevich led off the fifth inning and popped out for the first out of the inning for the Desert Dogs.

Duran was the second batter in the sixth inning and struck out with a swing in what was another quiet inning for the Desert Dogs. Kasevich’s next appearance resulted in a single, but he stranded at second.

Both Blue Jays prospects got one more at bat, with Duran flying out to end the eighth inning and Kasevich striking out to end the game.

Kasevich dug deeper into the stats and continued his recent trend of hitting the ball. His single in the first inning had an exit velocity of 110 miles per hour, the fourth hardest-hit ball of the game. Kasevich’s other single had an exit speed of 160.6 km per hour, while his lineout had an exit speed of 150.7 km per hour; all are considered hard-hit balls. The shortstop’s pop-out had an exit velocity of 134.9 mph.

Duran put three balls in play. His triple had an exit velocity of 100 miles per hour, and the catcher’s fly ball in the eighth inning had an exit velocity of 100 miles per hour. However, his grounder in the fourth inning had an exit velocity of 60 mph.

The Desert Dogs’ next game is Friday at 4:30 PM ET, where they will host the Peoria Javelinas.
