Blackhawks snap two-game losing streak with 3-0 shutout win over Rangers – The Hockey Writers NHL News Latest news, analysis and more

The Chicago Blackhawks and New York Rangers met on Wednesday, December 10 for a midweek game at the United Center. The Blackhawks suffered two huge losses last weekend and tried to redeem themselves with a win. The Rangers had also lost two games this weekend, but both were close games that were squandered in overtime. Both teams have had their ups and downs so far this season and find themselves just outside of a wild card spot in their respective conferences.

Both teams need more wins to get ready for a possible playoff push. This evening, it was finally the Blackhawks who added to their win column, with a 3-0 shutout victory over the Rangers. Here is the summary of the match.

Summary of the game

The Blackhawks got off to the faster start in the first frame, with their top line of Ryan Greene, Connor Bedard and Andre Burakovsky generating some big scoring chances early. But they couldn’t get anything past Ranger netminder Igor Shesterkin. After 20 minutes, the Blackhawks led 10-6 in shots and 23-15 in scoring chances, but the score remained 0-0.

As the second period started, the Blackhawks were awarded a power play on a holding penalty from Ranger’s Matthew Robertson. They could not repent. But soon after, the Rangers got a power play of their own (Blackhawks’ Wyatt Kaiser for cutting). Unfortunately, in the end it was not an advantage for the visiting team. Louis Crevier was behind the play and scored a shorthanded goal to make it 1-0 to the Blackhawks.

A few minutes later, Ryan Donato thought he gave the Blackhawks a 2-0 lead, but it was overruled due to what was deemed a handpass behind the net by Colton Dach. But Bedard only really made it 2-0 at 14:27 in the second inning, made possible by a beautiful pass from Burakovsky.

Despite the Rangers leading 11-8 in shots and 21-17 in shot attempts in the midframe, the Blackhawks led 2-0.

The Blackhawks picked up their momentum in the third period, with Tyler Bertuzzi scoring a goal at 3:53. Greene and Bedard were credited with the assists.

The Rangers were awarded two power plays in the third period but were unable to convert. They managed just four shots on target in the final frame. Final score: 3-0 Blackhawks.

What’s next

The Blackhawks now head to St. Louis to take on the Blues on Friday, December 12, before hosting the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday from the second half of back-to-back games. The Rangers return home for a three-game homestand, starting with the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday, December 13, and then the Anaheim Ducks and Vancouver Canucks next Monday and Tuesday (December 15 and 16), respectively.
