The Chicago Blackhawks have an important season. The organization has committed itself to building the design, and an abundance of concept choices is NHL-ready, or about to be NHL-ready. Many young players get the chance to leave their mark this season; Some become everyday players, while many others will make their NHL debut. In the meantime, a small group of veterans will be given the task of helping young people find their way.
In this series on the way to the 2025-26 campaign, we will view an example of every player who is expected to view the schedule, and what their role will be with the team. Today we emphasize the captain Nick Foligno from Blackhawks.

How he came here
Foligno had already enjoyed a very fertile hockey career well before he even landed in Chicago. He was set up in the first round (28one In general) by the senators in the 2006 design and spent the first five seasons of his NHL career in Ottawa.
In the summer before the 2012-2013 season, Foligno was traded to the Columbus Blue Jackets for defender Marc Methot. It was a situation in which the senators needed defenders and had to sacrifice an attacker. This was the start of a nine-year term of office at the Blue Jackets, Foligno is the longest with every team in his 18-year career.
In May 2015, Foligno was named Captain of the Blue Jackets and became the sixth captain in the franchise history. This was the season after he posted career hogers with 31 goals and 73 points in the 2014-15 campaign. He remained their captain for six more seasons.
Other distinctions with the Blue Jackets include Foligno that will be appointed to the NHL All-Star Game in 2015 and winning both the Mark Messier Leadership Award and the King Clancy-Trophy in the 2016-17 season.
Unfortunately, the leader of the Blue Jackets became a victim of a struggling team that had to apply. In April 2021 Foligno was Traded to the Toronto Maple LeafsWith the most important factor in the trade that are the Blue Jackets that receive a first round pick in the coming design. Foligno would be a free agent at the end of the season, so it made sense to move him for design capital.
Things did not work well in Toronto, but Foligno closed a two-year-old deal with the Boston Bruins from the 2021-22 season. He was relegated to a depth position on a stacked schedule, but continued to play a leading role in the Bottom-Zes attackers.

Ah, but then there was the opportunity to come to Chicago, to be a true experienced leader in a reconstruction team. Foligno has signed a one -year -old deal and we all know how that has been shown. He immediately became the biggest supporter of the team and de facto captain, before officially received the title at the start of the 2024-25 season. This was after the organization rewarded him in January 2024 with an extension of two years.
Foligno’s role in 2025-26
At the age of 37, Foligno does not wear production, as he used to. But last season he was taken second in the team in Faceoffs (704), FaceOFF percentage (48.4%) and a short time on the ice (174 minutes). He also led the team with 200 hits. This was all during the average of 15:55 minutes Ice Age.
It is clear from these statistics that Foligno still plays an important role on ice; Over-and-transfer contributions both on and outside the ice guide the young players and offering that leading role.
However, this is now the children’s team, and Foligno knows that better than anyone. He said the same amount to his exit interview in his end of the season last April. Real Foligno style, he also made a motivating speech of it.

And I said that is really exciting, that you can all grow together and find your own leadership roles in it, and have people there to guide you while you go, but learn and do it together, right? Find your voice or you will influence the game. And you know, I see guys doing that, and it’s pretty neat …
But that is the cool part of the sport; If you have the chance to really get off the ground, and these guys, I think, have realized that, and I hope they take it to heart this summer and come in with that attitude, a little Swagger, like, this is their team. You know, as much as I am the captain, this is their team, and I know that, and I find it exciting for me to hand it over and know that it will be in good hands.
Foligno played most of last season on the third or fourth rule, and I would expect a lot of the same this season. His contributions and ice age are likely to decrease if younger players step in larger roles.
This is also the last season of Foligno’s contract. Would the Blackhawks possibly sign him again? Will he be traded on a competition on the Trade Deadline to chase the Stanley Cup that he never won in his illustrious career? Will he retire?

These are questions that nobody knows the answers to, including Foligno himself. Because that is not important now. What is It is important to go to the right start this season and to build from there. Despite all the uncertainty about his future, I will undoubtedly be Foligno all-in for at least one campaign with the Blackhawks!
