Birmingham boss Davies relieved after Swansea draw amid away clash – Soccer News

Birmingham City boss Chris Davies was relieved to see his side come away with a draw at Swansea City after their struggles away from home this season.

After falling behind to Zan Vipotnik’s strike in the first half, Patrick Roberts scored a brilliant goal in the 72nd minute to seal a share of the win for Blues on the road.

Despite a strong start for Swansea, who produced 1.06 of 1.6 expected goals (xG) in the first half, it was Birmingham who looked stronger in the closing stages of the match.

Roberts, whose six shots in the draw were a joint season high for a Birmingham player, saw an effort blocked before Lewis Koumas failed to hit the target late on.

Only Sheffield Wednesday (seven) have recorded fewer points in the Championship this season than Birmingham (nine), but Davies was pleased with what he saw from his side at Swansea.

“It was a hard-fought game and I thought we fully deserved a point,” said Davies.

“I thought if anyone was going to win as the game went on it would be us, but coming away from home it should always be seen as a good point in the championship because there are no easy games.

“We are a team that has struggled a bit away from home, so to get a point and show again that real grit, togetherness and resilience is something to build on.

“We were much better in the second half than the first half. We had a few decent moments around their goal in the first half, but we went down again.”

“We didn’t take care of the ball well enough in that initial phase, they had more possession. But in the second half we went higher, were more aggressive in the press and forced them to make mistakes.”

“We had a lot of possession, pushed them back and I really liked the way we looked in the second half, and we looked like the team that was on the rise.”

Birmingham remain in 14th place in the Championship, two points and two places ahead of Swansea.

Blues take on Sheffield Wednesday in another away fixture in their next match before hosting Stoke City on January 24.
