EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ – When the first race heads to the starting gate Saturday night at The Meadowlands, there appears to be some serious green in the 20-cent Pick-5 pool.
Friday night’s Pick-5 bracket proved too tough for players as the odds for the winner were 9-1, 12-1, 5-2, 10-1 and 27-1. As a result, bettors will aim for a transfer of $26,400. Those with four correct prices earned $391.80.
The pool on Saturday will be worth swimming in. If $75,000 of “new money” is put into the hat after the low 15 percent rake is removed, that leaves $63,750. Add in the transfer and you have a total of just over $90,000, which creates a “negative takeout” where winning tickets pay out 120 percent.
The $1 PK 8 remained untouched for the third time in a row, increasing the carry to $66,454. A series where the winner’s odds went to the gate at 5-2, 10-1, 27-1, 4-5, 9-1, 7-2, 2-1 and 5-2 proved too much for the masses. Those with six correct points collected $163.40.
The 20-cent Pick-5 will be offered in races one through five, while the $1 PK 8 will be available in races three through 10.
GOO FOR BROKE TAKES FEATURE: A week after failing from an open lead as 1-5 favourite, Goo For Broke got many of her friends back after taking the $12,500 conditioned trot in a lifetime best 1:53.2.
“I got a lot of hate (last week),” driver Brett Beckwith said. “People thought I fell asleep. But she had a bad day. It wasn’t all my fault, but she recovered well tonight.”
Instead of racing in the lead as he had last week, Goo For Broke worked a pocket trip behind the 8-5 favorite Royal Comet and fired late on the pins to record a resounding three-length win over the Public Choice. Tom Swifty finished third.
“She could warm up really well in a helmet,” Beckwith said, “and I thought Anibal (Borjas, who pilots Royal Comet) would cover me. She’s a sweetheart and really loves her job. She’s quite versatile and I’m looking forward to the future she has.”
A 6 year old daughter of Googo Gagaa-Hs Carry On, trained by Per Engblom, Goo For Broke increased her lifetime stats to 10 wins in 58 starts for owner Timothy Betts. Second choice at 2-1 in the betting, she gave back $6 to win.
A LITTLE MORE: Beckwith led the driver colony with four wins on the night, pushing his Big M dash-win-leading total to 48. Colin Kelly won the late double ($7). His two winners on the night put him firmly in second place in the standings with 30 wins. … Engblom’s two walks down victory lane led the trainers. … All sources for the 14-race program totaled $2,735,565. … Racing resumes Saturday at 6 p.m
