Throughout Patrick Reed’s long professional golf career, controversy often followed him. That’s why it was no surprise when Reed made the controversial decision to join the first wave of pros to leave the PGA Tour for LIV Golf in 2022.
Reed is causing controversy again this week, but in a very different way. In a new interview, Reed praised the PGA Tour he once criticized and revealed that he would “definitely” consider leaving LIV to return to the PGA Tour.
Here’s what you need to know.
LIV’s Patrick Reed calls PGA Tour ‘best tour in the world’
Reed, the 2018 Masters champion, has remained busy since moving to LIV in 2022. In addition to earning one LIV victory, he continued to play on the DP World and Asian Tours and compete in major golf championships.
Last year he finished third at the Masters.
Before last week, the path back to the PGA Tour for star LIV golfers was virtually nonexistent. But now that the PGA Tour has greenlit Brooks Koepka’s return through the Returning Player Program, everything has changed.
Reed opened his year last week at the DP World Tour’s Dubai Invitational, where he finished 26th.

During the tournament, Reed spoke to That of the Telegraaf James Corriganand Corrigan asked Reed if he would consider leaving LIV to rejoin the PGA Tour, as Koepka did.
Then Reed began to give his unexpected answer.
Reed first explained that he is not eligible for the offer Koepka accepted because his Masters win did not fall in the 2022-2025 window required to qualify for the Tour’s Returning Member Program.
But if that rule were to change, Reed openly admitted he would have to consider making the move.
“It’s not really a decision for me at this point. I mean, that was for the players.” [who won majors from] 2022 and beyond. [But] If that number was there, I would definitely consider it [taken] until 2018,” Reed told Corrigan.
When asked to clarify whether that means Reed wants to play on the PGA Tour again, he explicitly replied: “Of course.”
He continued, “If it were up to me, I’d play everywhere. I’ve already played on three tours.” [LIV, the DP World Tour and the Asian Tour]so why not add another one?”
Reed went on to praise the PGA Tour and his experience there, where he won nine times, and confirmed that he could imagine himself returning one day.
“I’ve always enjoyed my time on the PGA Tour. I mean, let’s face it, it’s the best tour in the world. Look what they’ve done in golf,” Reed said. “You know, I can see myself playing there someday.”
He continued, “You just never know. Everything is so fluid, everything is unclear in golf. But at the end of the day, whatever my name is, I’m going to show up and play and, you know, try to play the best and represent not only myself, but my family, and also whatever my team is.” [is].”
Reed will pay fines to play DP World Tour after rules change
As previously mentioned, Reed’s performance at the Dubai Invitational last week was not a rarity. Since joining LIV he has toured regularly, and has enjoyed playing in Europe throughout his career.
In 2025, Reed played 10 DP World Tour events (excluding the majors). Although he is allowed to participate in DP World events, he has to pay a hefty fine, reportedly as much as $1 million per season.

In recent years, LIV Golf has paid those fines for him. But starting this year, Reed will have to pay the fines himself.
In are Telegraph interviewReed promised to continue with the DP World Tour despite the fines.
“Yes, starting this year the fines will go to the players, and not to LIV,” Reed said. “I still plan to come by and support [the DP World Tour]. This tour is incredible and I’m not going to let a few fines get in my way.”
However, he did make known his wish for LIV and the DP World Tour to resolve their differences so he could avoid the fines.
“I hope there’s a resolution, I mean, especially for a guy who has always come around and always supported this tour. I’ve played in everything from the big events to the small events. I haven’t changed the way I came here and played since I got my card here.”
