China, the most populous country in the world, has a growing community of golf fans and a rapidly expanding list of top golf courses.
The summer golf season in China runs from June to August, a time of year when the weather is typically warm and wet. However, the vast country will experience climate differences from region to region.
In general, golfers visiting this country can expect a long golf season and generally warm weather when it is golf season.
In our list we’ve included five of the best 18-hole golf courses in China, all of which can be considered modern, with the most historic course only opening for the first time in 1995.
Spring City Golf & Lake Resort
Located in Yunnan, China, the Lake Course at the Spring City Golf and Lake Resort is the oldest course on our list. It has a sister course in the same resort, the Mountain Course.
Opened in 1995, the Lake Course was designed by veteran golf course architect Robert Trent Jones Jr., and it plays as a par-72 affair at 7,204 yards.
As the name suggests, the Lake Course is a test on the lake. The course terrain includes slopes, so expect elevation changes throughout the 18 holes. For example, the eighth hole, a par-3, drops about 100 feet from the tee to the green.
The area is known for its strong winds and the resort has become a golf course destination for all of Asia in recent decades.
The Dunes On The Shenzhou Peninsula
Phil Smith and Tom Weiskopf, two experienced golf course designers, designed the West Course at The Dunes on the Shenzhou Peninsula.
Located in China’s Hainan province, the course first opened in 2010 and has quickly become one of the best golf courses in China.
It’s a par-72 course at 6,835 yards, the shortest on our list, and it’s a seaside course that has a links-like feel.
Golfers can expect some tight fairways, a course with ocean views and some strong winds to add to the challenge.
Shanqin Bay Golf Club
Located in Hainan Province, China, the Shanqin Bay Golf Club golf course opened in 2011.
It is a par-71 course measuring 6,894 yards, and is a course that William Ernest Core and Ben Crenshaw designed.
The terrain at Shanqin Bay is considered rugged, a feature that posed some design challenges for the architectural team.
Golfers should expect wide fairways, large greens and sharp bunkers. Thanks to its location on the South China Sea, this impressive course offers views of both the beach and the water.
Sheshan international golf club
The Sheshan international golf club was founded in 2004 and is a private course in Shanghai that plays as a par-72 over a decent length of 7,199 yards.
Neil Haworth, a Canadian architect, and Robin Nelson were the designers and the course has received much acclaim.
The amazing course, called “The Augusta National of China”, is ranked among some of the best in the world.
Golfers can expect wooded grounds, a course at the foot of a mountain, man-made ponds and a location that has made a very favorable impression on the golf club.
Mission Hills Golf Club
The lava fields course on the Mission Hills Golf Club is located in the Chinese province of Hainan.
The club itself is renowned for its many golf courses, with the Haikou site comprising no fewer than 12 courses, of which the Lava Fields is our favourite.
The Lava Fields course is a par-72 venue and is the longest course on our list due to its length, 7,475 yards.
Brian Curley, a well-known architect in the Asia-Pacific region, designed the course. It is another of many modern courses in China designed earlier this century.
Mission Hills has hosted the Omega Mission Hills World Cup, Mission Hills Star Trophy and the PGA Tour‘s WGC-HSBC champion in the past and is the host of the 2025 Aramco China Championship.
