Bentley unveils new Supersports-inspired GT S

Never let it be said that Bentley buyers don’t have a wide choice. While the fourth-generation Continental GT range already looked well-stocked, with two levels of the thumping V8 hybrid alongside a rear-drive Supersports, two body styles and specification options from Azure to Speed, one niche remained unfilled. It’s one that has proven popular in the past and aims to combine the best of the extensive Continental range: the GT S.

Simply put, it uses the 680bhp version of the V8 hybrid (as opposed to the Speed-spec 782bhp), with the smart chassis features usually reserved for the flagship, and then a Supersports-inspired look to top it all off. You can see why that might be attractive. Previously this was the V8 understudy for the older W12 models; Now that all GTs use the same drivetrain, just with different power outputs, popularity seems assured.

Chassis changes are encouragingly extensive for the GT S. Features previously reserved for the Speed and Mulliner include the eLSD and four-wheel steering; there’s also torque vectoring between and across the axes, plus a new generation of ESC software. The Bentley Performance Active Chassis, with the twin valve dampers that have proven so adept at shunting and massaging two and a half tonnes of Bentley, is also included.

While it’s still all-wheel drive (unlike the exclusively rear-wheel drive Supersports), the switchable ESC should allow the GT S to be “balanced by the driver on the accelerator pedal for a truly exhilarating driving experience.” Great news. Anyone who puts tires on the new 22 inch wheels for you will be happy. Although the 680bhp 4.0-litre remains fundamentally unchanged, it also benefits from a sports exhaust that ‘accentuates the V8’s crossplane beat’. And don’t forget, this is more powerful (but also heavier) than even the old Speed, so in terms of performance, no one wants to hit 60mph in 3.5 seconds, and a maximum of 186mph is claimed. Note that there is still an EV range of 50 miles available.

In both body configurations, a GT S is distinguished above a standard Conti by the Blackline specification, dark tinted lights with ‘Bentley’s Precision design detail’, plus a rear diffuser. The exterior is just the beginning, too, as the GT S’s interior gets unique two-tone upholstery, suede on the steering wheel and piano black like the exterior, for a “purposeful, performance-oriented driving environment.” And if no decision from Bentley seems right, there’s a whole world of alternative finishes, colors and materials available to create the ideal GT S.

While pricing and availability haven’t been confirmed yet, it doesn’t take a marketing genius to see that this costs more than a standard 680hp model and less than a Speed. With the Supersports not reaching customers until 2027, you can expect this sooner, to satisfy those looking for a “sporty aesthetic and an emphasis on pure driving pleasure.” Don’t be surprised if there are quite a few…
