England wicketkeeper-batsman Jos Buttler has backed the Ben Stokes-led team despite England’s 4-1 defeat in the Ashes in Australia. Buttler admitted the result was frustrating, especially as many believed the side had a real chance, adding that the campaign did not pan out as they had planned.
England lost three games in just eleven days, putting pressure on planning, team choices and off-field decisions. The visitors responded by winning the fourth Test, but Australia won the final match in Sydney to complete a 4–1 series win. Coach Brendon McCullum said the team needed to improve.
A disappointing and frustrating campaign – Jos Buttler on the Ashes loss in England
Jos Buttler said England’s 4-1 Ashes defeat in Australia was difficult to take. He admitted that the result was disappointing and frustrating for the players as the series did not go as they had hoped.
‘A disappointing and frustrating campaign for the boys’ Buttler told Sky Sports News.
“I think we all thought this was the moment that this team going to Australia would have a real chance to win. They will be frustrated that it didn’t turn out the way they planned.”
It’s very easy to point to certain things -Jos Buttler
Jos Buttler said poor results often lead to criticism of planning and preparation. He stated that modern tours leave little time to prepare and require teams to adapt quickly rather than wait for ideal conditions.
Buttler warned against hasty changes after heavy defeats and stressed the importance of protecting the team’s core identity. He said senior figures, including Ben Stokes, will take time to assess what went wrong and identify areas for improvement.
“At the end of the day it’s about results. I think if you don’t get the results you want, it’s very easy to point the finger at certain things. Your preparation, your planning, a lot of things that your hands are going to be tied to. You don’t actually have that much choice in terms of how you prepare, it’s not a blank canvas,” Buttler said.
“But I think the guys at the top, and because I know Ben, will take some time to evaluate what has happened, what things they would like to do differently, what things they need to improve and what things are actually really important pillars of the team. They have done very well in recent years and they really need to stick to that and push even further,” he added.
They will need some time to assess it – Jos Buttler
Jos Buttler said England should take time to review the tour and not make hasty changes. He stated that the team must maintain its core qualities and make small improvements where necessary. He added that Ben Stokes will work even harder to improve the team.
“I think they need some time to assess it. I know Ben quite well – I played a lot of cricket with him growing up – and his determination, desire and passion to take that team forward, improve them and grow them into the number one Test team in the world, which is where he wants to take them, will be stronger than ever after this tour.”
Buttler will next be seen in action during the white-ball series against Sri Lanka, which begins with the ODI series on January 22, while the T20I leg begins on January 30.
