Beltrami romp, Pace divisions produce three winners

WILKES-BARRE, Pa.- Tony Beltrami crushed his competition by winning the only $10,000 event of the American Harness Drivers Club (AHDC) Trot at Pocono Downs on Saturday (November 15) before Harrah’s Philadelphia hosted three $7,500 divisions of the AHDC Pace on Sunday (November 16), with several drivers all reaching the winner’s circle.

In the AHDC Trot, Beltrami swept Chiplosive 4-5 into the lead before halftime and raced away from his rivals for a 1:56 win. Beltrami circled his attack from third after a :27.4 first quarter to take command from Youmeandwhiskey (driven by Geovany Hernandez) and take the field to halftime at :57.2. Chiplosive maintained his speed on the march to three-quarters in 1:26.1 and powered through the rest as he extended his lead down the stretch. He crossed the line as a 5-1/4 length winner over Youmeandwhiskey, while Snowman Hanover (Vanessa Karlewicz) rallied from last place for third and I’m Out (Joe Faraldo) gave chase in fourth.

Maria Alvarez trains Chiplosive, a 9-year-old gelding by Explosive Matter, for owner Terrence Smith. He paid $3.80 to win.

Frank Tsipouras won the first of three AHDC divisions at Harrah’s Philadelphia on Sunday when he piloted Better Than Some to a post-to-post score in 1:54.3. Tsipouras seized control to a:27.2 first quarter and stabilized the pace for a breather to a:56.4 half. From there, Better Than Some raced away from the competition and opened a three-length lead to three-quarters in 1:24.4. He held on as Everbridge (Joe Lee) grounded first to reduce his lead down the stretch and crossed the line as the 1-1/2 length winner, while 7-5 favorite Revolver N (Michael Shults) closed out in third place. Duck Into The Nite (Geovany Hernandez) finished fourth.

Joseph Karrat owns and trains Better Than Some, a 9-year-old gelding by Better than cheddar. He paid $19.80 to win.

Yogi Sheridan used the same power of speed to land Shore Of Himself in the winner’s circle with a 1:55 effort in the second AHDC Pace. Sheridan commanded pylon starter Western Bayama (Frank Tsipouras) in a first quarter of :27.3 and withstood first-over pressure from Drinkin Again (Anthony Verruso) with splits of :56.1 and 1:24.4. Drinkin Again eventually staggered out of the wide chase as Shore Of Himself raced away for a 2-1/4 length victory. Redding Hanover (Joe Lee), the 3-2 favorite, moved from second to second, while A Stud Named Sam (Raymond Burt) followed suit from third to third. Try Line (Charles Longo) saved ground from last place for fourth.

Sheridan trains Shore Of Himself, a 7-year-old gelding by West bankfor owner Beverly Schiffman. He paid $7.20 to win.

Michael Shults took the final AHDC Pace division with a successful first-over push from Flying Tiger in a 1:57 mile. Shults came into action from fourth after a :28.1 first quarter and moved uncovered to the rim after leader Costa Diva (Cote Keim) through a :59 half. Flying Tiger moved to within distance of the leader on the backstretch and increased its pressure on the leader beyond three-quarters in 1:27.3. Costa Diva fought the challenge through the final corner and into the stretch before falling prey to the attack in the closing stages as Flying Tiger cruised to a three-quarter victory. Pinebush Lifesaver (Dante Scattolini) closed for third, a further six lengths behind, with 6-5 favorite Rockinwiththebest (Yogi Sheridan) a further five lengths behind in fourth.

Shults trains Flying Tiger, a 6-year-old gelding by Always B Mikifor owner Blazer One Racing. He paid $8.80 to win.
