Deerfield Beach, Fla. (WSVN) – A family asks for the help of the audience to find a driver who, they said, struck a few and a woman seriously injured while the victims tried to cross a street in Deerfield Beach.
Jesse Abernathy spoke with 7News on Tuesday, said that he and his girlfriend, the 58-year-old Fanny Shindle, went home after dinner in the Cove Waterfront Restaurant and Tiki Bar when they were hit by a vehicle, just before 8:30 pm on August 29.
“We could both have died,” said Abernathy.
Abernathy believes that the driver should have known that they hit two people when they drove away without stopping.
“It was like hit a squirrel on the road or something, you know. I mean, there is no way they didn’t know they both touched us,” said Abernathy.
Abernathy said the couple had been to the restaurant several times in the past and would always wait until the road is free before he crossed the road.
‘[We] Wait until it was clear, waited for a few cars to pass and had enough space, we thought, “said Abernathy.
While they make their way over East Hillsboro Boulevard, a vehicle hit the west of the Hillsboro bridge on its way while the pair drove almost double the speed limit.
“I don’t even think he delayed through it. He flew, 50, 60 miles per hour,” said Abernathy.
Abernathy said his girlfriend first saw the car before the impact.
“I think she just gave me a little push, just like a little bit, just enough, so it hardly cut me,” said Abernathy.
Shindle suffers from the victim of the collision and is sent through the street.
“When it hit her, she went 30 feet away and landed,” said Abernathy.
Abernathy hurried to her and called 911, grateful that she was at least alert enough to talk immediately afterwards.
“She just wanted to go home. She said:” Take me home, take me home, “said Abernathy.
The couple were rushed to the hospital where doctors found that Shindle suffered various broken bones. She stays in intensive care.
Abernathy said the driver never stopped.
“It is sad that someone can just do something like that with a person and just take off,” he said.
The Broward Sheriff office told 7News that they are investigating the circumstances of this hit-and-run crash.
