Bell hopes Spicy Marg could be a classic contender | At The Races

Spicy Marg’s seasonal success has given Michael Bell food for thought for next season, including a possible move to the 1000 Guineas.

The stable star celebrated three wins in seven starts in her junior campaign, most recently in a Listed race at Newmarket last month.

That triumph came over six furlongs for the first time and the Fitzroy House trainer has toyed with the possibility of classic glory if she continues to train this winter, with the Nell Gwyn the first to be considered.

“It has opened up options for the future because she reached the border very strong, her siblings have gone on to win,” Bell said.

“Starspangledbanner (dad), they’re getting further than six and I think we’re looking at a change of tactics and maybe stretch her out next spring and see how we get on.”

When asked about her potential 1000 Guineas hopes, Bell added: “Well, she’ll definitely be in it! That and many others.

“I find it very interesting how well she won and Hector (Crouch, jockey) was very impressed with her, she did very well to win.

“It was a very tough race, especially for her, and she went from last to first in a big field in a few strides.

“You could put her to sleep during a race, she doesn’t pull, she just has a regular snaffle bit in her mouth. It will be very interesting how she continues to train and how she trains in the spring.”

“There’s a lot to think about, there’s a mindset to look at the Nell Gwyn.

“We know she’s performing really well fresh, would you just take the opportunity and go straight there (to the Guineas), and she stays or she doesn’t stay and you know after that first weekend in May which way you’re going for the season.”
