Former UFC welterweight champion Belal Muhammad says it was a strategic move by Ian Machado Garry to stab him in the eye.
Muhammad, who fought Garry at UFC Qatar last month, was unable to return to victory in the three-round co-main event. ‘The Future’ controlled the pace from the first bell, stuffing every takedown and maintaining the ideal distance. He also used his reach to his advantage and chopped up Muhammad’s lead calf. After fifteen minutes Garry reached a unanimous decision.
Recently, ‘Remember the Name’, while praising the Irishman’s fighting IQ, claimed that the Dubliner deliberately stabbed him in the eye three times to win the fight.
The 37-year-old believes that there should be new rules for eye pricks and that there should be a point deduction. He said:
“I got poked in the eye three times. I said Ian was very smart at finding ways to win fights. He understood that getting poked in the eye would win the fight. Especially if you do it early and you don’t get points taken away. The rules need to be changed. There need to be repercussions.”

Belal Muhammad admits important mistakes against Ian Machado Garry
In the clip above, Belal Muhammad spoke about the mistakes he made at UFC Qatar. He also revealed that he wanted a five-round fight against Ian Machado Garry. However, because it was a three-rounder, Mohammed believes he gained momentum in the final frame, and he did too late.
‘Remember the Name’ wants to learn how to get the most out of the first round. He said
“Ian was pretty smart. He’s very good at distance management; he would hang and move. Obviously, we pushed for five rounds. In a three-round fight, you’ve got to start faster. You’ve got to start earlier. You’ve got to catch him earlier. To me, we’ve got to change that. We’ve got to get on the gas earlier… We’ve just got to get better.”
