BBC Sport responds from ‘neutrals’ to Newcastle United after 2-1 win over Manchester City

Interesting to read these comments from BBC Sport, following Newcastle United’s 2-1 win over Manchester City.

The comments from neutral people in particular tell…

It was very different to what Newcastle United fans had come to expect from BBC Sport’s ‘neutrals’.

BBC Sport comments from neutrals in the past have largely been a catalog of abuse directed at NUFC supporters.

Particularly stuff about the owners of Newcastle United and the media-inspired pile-ups that NUFC fans have become accustomed to when they are blamed for who now owns their club.

On this occasion, politics was almost entirely absent, focusing instead on matters on the ground…

The BBC Sport readers comments of neutral players, some Man City fans, plus the odd Newcastle supporter also contributing:

“It appears reports of Eddie Howe’s death have been greatly exaggerated.”

‘Well played Newcastle, top result. A great weekend overall, with both 115 and Liverpool immersing themselves. You’ve played top football and kept it up all the way through 90 plus pep. Well done.’

‘Well played Newcastle, a real club with real fans… this result should please most people.’

‘Real club? They are owned by the PIF

I agree about great fans’

“So Newcastle’s oil money is different to the city’s oil money?”

‘I’m neutral here. I have to say that Doku puts us to shame though. I would fall over writhing in pain if my grandmother were waving a tea towel half a kilometer away.’

‘Serious? So Newcastle’s players didn’t go down with every light touch. They were the shame, it’s becoming embarrassing how the referees are cheated so often.’

‘Sore loser Pep at the kick-off at the end.’

‘Klopp used to do the same thing. It’s easy to appear friendly and dignified when you’re winning every week, their real personalities are revealed after a loss’

‘On my way home now. I like a game where both sides go for it, instead of a low block. It was the same when City played Klopp’s ‘Pool – high-octane stuff. I loved it regardless of the outcome. Well done Newcastle. Not the result I wanted, but nice nonetheless.’

‘Ugly attitude towards losing. You don’t have to like it, but Pep and Donna have to stick their necks out. That attitude shows who they are as a club. Plus of course all the deceit and financial manipulation, but one thing at a time…’

‘Well played Newcastle. Stay humble.’

‘We are fourteenth, we are not shouting it from the rooftops for the time being.

But if we had a few more victories like that, we might reconsider!’

‘Wow

That made our match against Spuds tomorrow a must-win

Brilliant Newcastle and brilliant Forest.’

‘That was nonsense from the city, another half-hearted away performance just like at Villa. With Newcastle being just above the relegation zone, we should have really pressed from the start, but no, our goalkeeper saved us from the kick-off as our defense gave away opportunities all too easily. Well done to Newcastle who wanted more of it.”

‘City improves after an imperfect selection transition. Losing to NU, in their blunder – that’s not a huge shock. NU is a super club, with a strong team and a top manager. Most teams will drop points in Newcastle. At the end of the season, many clubs will be close together, with quite a few points lost. City will be at the top there. It looks like Arsenal will clearly be faultless.”

‘Newcastle delivered a disciplined performance.

City looked like a one-man team.”

‘No arguments from me, Newcastle deserved it and but for Donnaruma it might have been more, we had our chances, but not for us today.

Always a good game at SJP and the Geordies are good hosts.”

‘Hello Saint Harvey! All of Arsenal salutes you. A big moment in the title race if Arsenal can take advantage of it.”

“The two young full-backs make such a difference to Newcastle’s ability to cover opposition wingers and speed in transition. Both gave a wonderful performance. They were two excellent teams. Where has this Newcastle been?’

‘I completely agree that Newcastle are a much better team with these two young lads, hopefully they stay fit and injury free.’

‘Newcastle played very well, but the referees decided the game and not the players.’

‘If the players don’t put the ball in the net, the referees don’t have to make decisions. All three goals have been scrutinized and verified and declared legal.”
