BBC Sport responds from ‘neutrals’ to Newcastle United after 2-1 win over Burnley

Interesting to read these comments from BBC Sport, following Newcastle United’s 2-1 win against Burnley.

The comments from neutral people in particular tell…

It was very different to what Newcastle United fans had come to expect from BBC Sport’s ‘neutrals’.

BBC Sport comments from neutrals in the past have largely been a catalog of abuse directed at NUFC supporters.

Particularly stuff about the owners of Newcastle United and the media-inspired pile-ups that NUFC fans have become accustomed to when they are blamed for who now owns their club.

On this occasion, politics were completely absent, focusing instead on matters on the ground.

The BBC Sport readers comments of neutral people, some Burnley fans, Newcastle fans (and the odd Sunderland fan, including those pretending to be Newcastle fans…) also contribute:

‘First gear performance with Wednesday evening in mind. Tonali, Joelinton and Hall all rested, Wissa getting their first taste of football this season.

The late late goal for Burnley is no more important than the late late goals for West Ham and Brentford, which made no difference to the result, just changed how shiny they looked.”

‘Both penalties were clear penalties, so VAR was an advantage in this match.

In the first, the player had his arms extended in front of him when the ball was in his hands. On the second penalty, Ramsey moved his elbow towards the ball. Probably a reflex reaction, but a punishment nonetheless.’

‘What I don’t like is this situation where a ball can be shot at someone from two meters, hit their arm and that’s a penalty.

Or that players have to jump for a header while holding their arms at their sides as if they were playing table football.’

‘Both penalties were legal and valid under all handball rules. Both were deliberately hands-to-ball and there can be no arguments about either. However, the red card was harsh and spoiled the match. Dubravka’s saves were, as usual, in vain, when he should have done better, even though he was fouled for the first goal.’

‘Burnley the better team with only 10 men.’

‘Beating better teams is a very Newcastle thing.

Unfortunately, that also applies to not beating worse teams.’

‘Newcastle: 3 points, but… man, they make you sweat!’

‘It makes you sweat, so finally we know why all those Geordies go topless no matter how cold it is.’

‘It is necessary to stop giving away these late goals at home. Cost them against Arsenal, Liverpool and Spurs. Luckily not this one.’

‘No team is immune from conceding goals at some point, this one didn’t matter.’

“Any other result than a win for Newcastle would have been unfair.”

“Can get the job done and managed to rest Tonali, Joelinton and Barnes.”

‘I hate to see Burn playing at left back.’

‘Burn played a full season at left back when we returned to the UCL. We had one of the best defenses in the league when he played LB. Get off the wagon and use your common sense.”

‘The gap is still there. Fifteen games and Newcastle haven’t topped Sunderland once.’

’15 games, not bad, that’s quite a lot of time.

I mean, it’s nowhere near 9 years… but it’s still worth a pat on the back or something!’

‘There comes a point where you have to face the fact that Newcastle is not getting better. Their position in the competition is unquestionable.’

‘Maybe take a look at the table before you make stupid comments about league position, the table is ridiculously tight this season.’

‘Anthony Gordon back in shape.’

‘On form? He was shocking! I lost count of how many times he gave the ball away.”

“Don’t be silly.”

‘League position doesn’t lie?’ It’s only 3 points away from 4th position???’

‘If only I had read these comments before looking at the score.

I would have been confident we would have beaten Newcastle easily or at least achieved a good draw.

Turns out they won and Burnley remains in the relegation zone. We don’t even have the comfort of a big European match midweek to cheer us up.’
