Interesting to read these comments from BBC Sport, following the 2-2 draw between Newcastle United and Spurs.
The comments from neutral people in particular tell…
It was very different to what Newcastle United fans had come to expect from BBC Sport’s ‘neutrals’.
BBC Sport comments from neutrals in the past have largely been a catalog of abuse directed at NUFC supporters.
Particularly stuff about the owners of Newcastle United and the media-inspired fuss that NUFC fans have become accustomed to when they are blamed for who now owns their club.
On this occasion, politics was almost completely absent…
The BBC Sport readers comments of neutral players, some Spurs fans, plus the odd Newcastle supporter, also contributed:
‘Newcastle certainly lost two points there, but at least we showed fight for a change.’
‘Never a penalty. The VAR did not have to interfere. Stop ruining football.”
‘It’s easy to be a cowardly referee when you’re called by var. Var takes the flak. Ref no spine.”
‘It’s a violation everywhere on the field and no one complains. He doesn’t look at the ball, he holds it, wraps his arms around it and pulls it down.
why is the bar higher for a penalty than for a free kick?’
‘Idiot Bentancur – players have been warned that if they don’t look at the ball a penalty will likely be imposed – why on earth would we take the risk? Almost cost Spurs a point!’
“As a gooner I have to say justice has been done. That was NEVER a penalty.’
“Spurs only had two shots on target, two goals.”
‘I love Newcastle fans, been away there a few times with Spurs, never any problems.’
‘That challenge elsewhere on the pitch is a free kick and no one doubts that. The same challenge in the box means it’s a penalty.’
‘As a Liverpool fan this is just a glimpse into our world over the years.
Deludeds will still shout ‘LiVARpool’ as if it’s somehow relevant’
‘Great point for Spurs in a tough spot, let’s hope it gives us a boost.
Shame the referee bottled it at 50,000 Geordies.’
‘Punishment all day long.’
‘As a Spurs fan I have to say… watching the replay… the defender was clearly struggling with the attacker. It couldn’t be more blatant.
Sadly, I agree it should have been a penalty. But I’m glad Spurs managed to equalize in the end. 1-1 seems like a fair outcome.’
‘As a fellow Spurs fan I agree. People need to look at decisions for what they are and put aside the biases of their own team.”
‘Never deserved a point, but after the most pathetic penalty in football history we took it.’
‘Newcastle were by far the best team. This nonsense about one referee decision somehow creates injustice in the entire match. It’s stupid, I’m not sure how Spurs haven’t been booked multiple times… consistently wrong!’
‘I’m not sure how the referee didn’t book Newcastle players because they were constantly throwing themselves on the ground.
Agree Spurs didn’t deserve anything, but maybe that’s more on Newcastle for not getting all three, especially considering they had 12 men.’
‘I suggest you familiarize yourself with the guidance given to referees on this subject, consisting of 5 tips, as seen on Sky Post match. If any of them applies a fine, “it must be imposed.” I think it was a penalty on four of the five pointers, so it was the right decision.”
‘Well done to the Spurs fans who travel to Newcastle on Tuesday evening. Newcastle may have been the better team on the night, but that penalty decision was shocking. That’s why Spurs deserved the draw. Well done Spurs.’
‘Excellent Spurs…well done! And great for the supporters who travel all the way there. I wouldn’t want that
And well done Newcastle, glad you had the 12th man (VAR) on the pitch. You did well to get a draw.”
‘How many shots on target, put down your beer glasses. Fluke target. Real fans don’t travel to Newcastle. Don’t wear out that armchair.’
‘LOL! Toon was on top for most of the match. Spuds were lucky they didn’t concede more goals.’
‘No UK PL official, especially including VAR operators, should ever visit or work in Saudi Arabia. What possible explanation is there for awarding a fine to Ncle?’
‘Newcastle were all over Spurs but in the end Spurs deserved a point, if not all three.
Purely based on the inconsistency of the Premier League officials. A disgraceful penalty decision.’
‘All 3? Away, Newcastle were wasteful, but Spurs were pretty rubbish for most of the game. Poor defending cost Newcastle twice
And it was a clear pen where Bentancur didn’t even look at the ball, that’s a foul, it doesn’t matter what Micah or Carragher says.”
