BBC Sport asks experts and journalists how the 6 English Champions League clubs will do

BBC Sport has looked at the upcoming Champions League competition.

Especially the six English clubs, the most that every competition in the competition has had in one season.

Chelsea, Man City, Arsenal, Spurs, Liverpool and Newcastle United compete.

The half dozen Premier League clubs that make up exactly one sixth of the 36 clubs that are in line in the Champions League of this season 2025/26.

BBC Sport with a number of experts and journalists a number of questions.

I have chosen the most relevant and interesting answers for fans of Newcastle United.

BBC Sport report On the Champions League 2025/26:

Which English club will get the furthest?

Nicky Bandini (Italian football expert):

“Really, all English clubs should be able to go to a deep run, given their resources. Premier League clubs have spent more on transfers this summer than those from La Liga, Serie A, Ligue 1 and the Bundesliga combined.”

Rory Smith (journalist for the observer):

“I am going for Manchester City on the basis of which I think Arsenal, in April, is distracted by their (eventually successful) striving for the Premier League title.

“I would expect all six English teams to make the knockout rounds and two or three to make the semi-final Pep Guardiola will push particularly hard: Europe is perhaps its best chance of a big trophy.”

Theo Walcott (former Southampton and Everton player):

“I think all six English teams will do well, not just Arsenal.

“I may only look at Newcastle and think that they might not have the power in -depth for this competition, but they still have to make the knockout phases.”

Nedum Onuoha (former City Player):

“There are six of them, which are able to beat someone, will be interesting.”

Which player are you looking forward to looking at?

Steve Wilson (match of the day commentator):

“Nick Woltemade was omitted from Stuttgart’s Champions League team last season, so will probably make his debut in the competition when Newcastle Barca plays on Matchday One. Memories of Tino Asprilla, someone?”

Thomas Hitzlsperger (former Villa and Stuttgart player and Germany International):

“It is probably not the most obvious choice, but I go for Woltemade.

“There has been so much talking about him for a while – perhaps not in England until Newcastle signed him for £ 69 million, but certainly in Germany.

“Bayern Munich wanted to sign him in the summer, but Stuttgart would not sell him for the money they offered. Bayern President Uli Hoonheid says that Woltemade is not worth what Newcastle has paid for him, but the big price tag is not his fault.

Woltemade has just helped Stuttgart to win the German cup and he has something about him. He seems like a very sober man you want to do well and I hope that his assets will shine through in the Premier League and the Champions League. “

John Murray (BBC 5 Live Correspondent):

“The player I look forward to is Yamal because I still have to respond to him in a Barcelona shirt.

Although it seems disappointing as if he may not be suitable for Thursday in St James’ Park, I suspect that there will be other opportunities as this Champions League progresses. “
