Bayern Munich is still waiting for a response from Dayot Upamecano about a contract extension offered.
The 27-year-old French international, whose existing contract expires this summer, has been negotiating a new contract with the club for months.
Upamecano is now free to sign a pre-contract with a foreign club and has been continuously linked with Real Madrid, whose need for defensive cover has become more urgent since Brazilian centre-back Éder Militão suffered a torn hamstring last month.
Bayern have made no secret of their desire to keep the Frenchman, who has flourished in the two and a half years since Vincent Kompany was appointed head coach. Initial contract talks stalled over Upamecano’s wage demands, but the Bavarian club have since bailed out financially in an attempt to reach an agreement.
Why did Dayot Upamecano hesitate about contract extension?
While it is clear that financial terms have been agreed, disagreements remain over the timing of a rumored £56 million release clause. While Bayern would prefer the clause to come into effect next year, Upamecano reportedly wants it to become active this summer.
The Frenchman’s stance has reportedly irritated club officials, who have made it clear that the latest offer is final. That position seemed to be reiterated on Monday by Bayern sporting director Max Eberl.
Bayern is waiting for Upamecano’s contract response
“We are waiting for a response from Upamecano,” Eberl said emphatically.
While optimism remains that Upamecano will commit to the club, it is believed Bayern would prefer to make a decision before the end of the current transfer window. The club will undoubtedly want to avoid a repeat of the story in which Leroy Sané left for Galatasaray for free last summer after he hesitated about a contract extension.
It is understood that Upamecano has been offered a package worth around £17m per season, in addition to a £17m signing bonus.
Eberl has also confirmed that Bayern have started talks with England captain Harry Kane over a contract extension.
