Nishesh Basavareddy and his team on Thursday confirmed recent speculation that he has hired Gilles Cervara as his new coach, as reported by the ATP website.

Cervara coached Daniil Medvedev for eight seasons, during which the Russian became world number 1 and won the 2021 US Open. He also finished second at Grand Slams five times. Their partnership came to an end at the 2025 US Open, where Medvedev’s slump reached a breaking point with a wild five-set loss to Benjamin Bonzi in the first round.

The current number 13 in the world won only one Grand Slam match this entire year.

Basavareddy, 20, is ranked 167th after briefly entering the top 100 at number 99 this summer. The American, who played college tennis at Stanford, won seven tour-level matches in 2025. This included a semi-final in Auckland, after which he won a set against Novak Djokovic in the first round of the Australian Open. Basaveddy’s next event is the NextGen ATP Finals in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia later this month.

Medvedev is now coached by Thomas Johansson. The 29-year-old ended last season on a relatively high note, eventually capturing an ATP title in Almaty, along with semi-final appearances in Beijing and Shanghai plus a quarter-final result in Paris.
