Rejecting allegations of corruption in appointments and bias leveled against him by Congress MP Nagaraj Yadav, Legislative Council Chairman Basavaraj Horatti on Monday said he would decide his future course of action if a no-confidence motion was moved against him in the House of Representatives.

“We have to follow the government’s decision. I don’t have any information about distrust. I am unbiased. Except for one member, no one has made that accusation or spoken lightly about me. Members of all parties are happy with me and there has been no accusation of bias,” Mr Horatti told the press before the start of the winter session here. “I am apolitical and my association with the BJP was during the elections. I resigned from the primary membership of the BJP soon after I became president and it has been accepted.”

When asked about his future course of action if a motion was tabled against him, the veteran leader, who has won a record eighth consecutive election, said: “Let me see you in the House. If the motion is tabled, a decision will be taken that day.”

On allegations of corruption in appointments to the Legislative Council Secretariat, he said, “The appointments were made through the Karnataka Examinations Authority. An investigation has been initiated against three employees of the Secretariat against whom allegations of corruption have been made.” He said he would not remain in his post for a moment if allegations of corruption are proven. “Those who make baseless accusations of corruption are cowards.”

Congressional Response

However, Mr. Nagaraj alleged that his complaint related to the direct appointments. He also said that the decision on filing the no-confidence motion depended on the decision of the high command. “All we want is for a member of Congress to become chairman.”

The allegations come amid a move by a section of Congress leaders who have been trying to replace Mr. Horatti as Congress, with the help of the lone independent, now has the numbers to dethrone the Speaker. In response, Mr Horatti told the press that leaders of opposition parties had held the position of chairman for the past four decades.
