The most talked-about golf tournament of the moment has nothing to do with the PGA Tour or LIV. Instead, it’s an online spectacle featuring dozens of the game’s biggest influencers. The tournament was filmed months ago and is currently being released episode by episode on YouTube.
“Golf is an incredible vehicle for entertainment,” said Barstool Sports “Fore Play” podcast host Sam “Riggs” Bozoian on this week’s episode of Subpar. “That’s why YouTube golf exists. It’s not just about seeing good golf shots.”
Case in point: the aforementioned Internet Invitational, a made-for-You-Tube tournament hosted by Barstool Sports and Bob Does Sports, in which 48 personalities compete for a $1 million grand prize. The tournament was an instant success, racking up millions of views online as each episode was posted – despite the fact that the episodes are long, with Episode 1 clocking in at almost four hours.
Part of the allure of the tournament? The sudden emergence of a villain in episode 1. (Golf’s Dylan Dether gave an excellent analysis of the situation here, but in short: competitor Luke Kwon missed his tee time, which upset his teammates, and Kwon showed no remorse whatsoever. Shocking!)
What does Bozoian, captain of one of the Internet Invitational teams, think of the response to Kwon? He shared his thoughts with Subpar hosts Colt Knost and Drew Stoltz in the studio.
“It’s funny because when we look back, after we finished, we’re all happy. We all thought it went well,” Bozoian said. “We all thought the drama was crazy. And looking back, I didn’t even think about the Luke Kwon situation. That’s how many other things happened and how good it gets. It didn’t even occur to me.
“I was the captain of the opponent, so I was happy that he had slept in and I already thanked him, but I would go to him again and say: the best thing that happened was that you slept in,” he continued. “It took over the internet. It sucks for him. And it’s kind of a crazy amount of build-up for someone who just slept in. So I honestly feel sorry for Luke Kwon to a certain extent, and he could have handled it better afterward.

“We could all do better with sh– in our entire lives, so whatever. But then if he’s going to like this supervillain because he just slept it off and didn’t overly apologize afterwards, it’s probably not worth how much sh– he got.”
Bozoian said the criticism Kwon received often has to do with the area in which Barstool is involved.
“We’ll call you out for your bullshit…” he said. “We’re going to hold everyone accountable and people are going to be prone to conflict. It’s kind of how Barstool works.”
