Ballast rally for upset win in Dover Open

Ballast (Tall dark stranger) followed cover and got going late to win the Fillies and Mares Open Handicap Pace at Bally’s Dover on Wednesday evening.

Laurel Court sprinted early in the race and ran a poor 26.3 approaching the opening quarter

Jett Propelled settled into the pocket. Ballast and Ragtime Red, the betting choice for even odds, were content to save energy along the pylons early.

Laurel Court led a field of the best mares in the field to the half in 56 flat, a quarter of 29.2.

Ragtime Red was the first to maneuver into the thirty-degree cold and race across the ridge. Ballast took advantage of a 2nd over trip when Incaseyoudidntknow covered 3rd over.

Laurel Court remained in the lead through the three quarters in 1:23.4, a quarter of 27.4.

Ragtime Red held the lead at the top of the stretch. Ballast sprinted clear late in the track and shot home to win by neck in 1:52.4. He paid $24.60 for the win.

BALLAST REPEAT

Ragtime Red finished second and Incaseyoudidntknow closed late to finish third.

Ballast (Tall Dark Stranger) is owned by EVM Racing LLC. Chuck Crissman Jr. trained and Corey Callahan rode. Vince Copeland nailed a triple.
