Ball markings were his hobby. Now he supplies Ryder Cup stars of them

When the world was closed during the Pandemie, Jon Millman, a New York -based manager for investment portfolios, wanted to try his hand on something new. An avid golfer, he decided to try wedge stamping. There was only one problem: it is more difficult than it seems, and wedges are expensive test products. So he thought he would start with small pieces of metal, which he transformed into adapted ball markings.

Millman started giving the markers to friends who encourage him to sell them online.

“I thought I might buy a set of golf clubs,” he said. “That was my first goal. Sell enough markings to buy golf clubs.”

But things took a big upward turn when Sky Sports-broadcaster Rob Lee bought one from Millman’s Markering and started to give it to his golf world colleagues. Suddenly Millman made markers for Rich Beem, Laura Davies and Paul McGinley – and their friends. They include Rory Mcilroy, Tommy Fleetwood and Jon Rahm.

“That’s where it really started,” said Millman. “I didn’t expect me to sell them. I certainly didn’t expect professional players to use them.”

But not only the players used them – she Won tournaments use them. On the Millman website, Golf lIFE Metals, you can order its existing designs or make your own designs. Millman says that he does not always know when players use the markings he makes and sends to them, but one that he made for McIlroy, with the name of McIlroy’s daughter Poppy on it, eventually received tons of broadcasting time during a tournament broadcast. Millman estimates that he made dozens of more markers for McIlroy in the following years. In April, McIlroy used one of Millman’s adapted markers to conquer the career Grand Slam at Augusta National.

Millman’s golf world connections eventually culminated in an order of more than 400 markers for this year’s Ryder Cup. And with regard to the faithfulness of Millman on Bethpage this year? He said he is sure that he will feel some mixed emotions, regardless of which team wins.

“Like Rory and Tommy and those guys [win and] All use the marker, it won’t be as painful as would be normal, “he said.
