Former Pakistan fast bowler Tanveer Ahmed fueled the debate after Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan from the Pakistan team had been omitted for the Asia Cup 2025. He suggested that the two senior players should consider stepping away from international cricket by the selectors.
In a social media post on X, Tanveer wrote, ‘Meri Babar Azam or Rizwan Spread request Ha Ald Log Ye Samajhtey Hain AP Logon Ke Izzat Nahi ha (My request to Babar Azam and Rizwan is that if you think you have no respect and then retire from international cricket. We have examples of Virat Kohli for us. @Babarazam258 @imrizwanpak respect is in your own hands.)“
Babar, once the number 1 T20i seizure and former Pakistan captain, was one of the most consistent artists in the country in the format and has held various Batting records. Rizwan has also played an important role in the successes of Pakistan in recent years, but both were omitted after the poor T20 World Cup campaign of the team, where they did not pass the group phase.
Since that exit, neither Babar nor Rizwan have seen in the T20i squadrons of Pakistan, where the selectors opt for new faces in their rebuilding.
Tanveer’s comments, making a comparison with the pension of Virat Kohli from T20Is after winning the World Cup 2024, added a layer to Pakistan’s current debate about senior players and the direction of the team
