We have all heard about the health benefits of walking, but how fast do you have to walk? What is the average running speed to age and what factors do the average running speed influence? We are going to break it all out and help you tackle the pace if that is also your goal.

What is the average running speed?

There is no average for all people, because you would expect it to be heavily influenced by age, gender and fitness level.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the average running speed is approximately 2.5 to 4 miles per hour for adults (see Treadmill Pace Chart).

This means that it would take about 15 to 24 minutes to walk a milewhich is further confirmed by data collected in a 2019 study Save five decades.

Many of these causes are under our control and working on it can improve overall health! In particular, we know that strength training can help to delay muscle loss and we can continue to improve our endurance by doing things such as consistent daily walks.

Why we delay with the age:

Other factors that influence the average running speed

In addition to age and gender, there are other factors that can influence your average running speed.

Although most people have a comfortable running speed and a maximum or sturdy running speed, the average speed at which they walk from day to day can vary quite a bit, even between these two extremes.

Here are some other things that can change your average running speed from day to day or between two people of the same age and biological sex:

Your current fitness level will significantly influence your walking speed, especially over longer distances.

2. Height
