Vintage character has its place, but visitors to realestate.com.au last month were all about modern homes with space, size and plenty of show-off features.
Big, bold and beautiful – and ideally on the beach. That’s the vibe that really excited visitors to realestate.com.au in October, with some stunning modern townhouses in prime locations stealing the attention and clicks.
From a glamorous family resort on the Gold Coast to an idyllic rural retreat near Geelong, a status symbol in inner-city Melbourne and a luxurious beachside spot on the NSW Central Coast, there was no shortage of dream homes to make you swoon.
But not all of them were great. Smaller gems also made the top eight, including a $1 million-plus Gold Coast apartment with ocean views and a starter home in Geelong that needed some TLC.
Half of the top 12 were in or near capital cities, with the rest near popular regional hubs close to the capitals that have become increasingly popular in recent years.
Four of them were in Victoria, three in Queensland, three in New South Wales, one in Western Australia and one in South Australia. Tasmania, the Northern Territory and the ACT did not make the top 20.
Here’s a look at the beauties that are causing a stir among buyers and dreamers alike.
Beachfront apartment on the exclusive Gold Coach strip
It’s unusual for an apartment to be the most viewed home of the month, but it’s not every day you have the chance to snag a stretch of beach on the Gold Coast for around $1 million.

This cute and charming two-bedroom apartment at 4/238 Jefferson Lane, Palm Beach may be compact, but it is steps from the sand, full of light, has great sea views and has been beautifully renovated whilst retaining an endearing vintage character.
“When you put something on the market around the million dollar mark and you have a view like that, everyone says, ‘Wow, where is that?’” said agent Ed Cherry of Coastal, who reported there has been a steady stream of interest.

Rural area outside Geelong
‘Strathmile’ is the kind of rural retreat most people want these days: a slice of country life yet on the edge of the city. But at almost 150 hectares, 204 Andersons Road, Barrabool is the real deal.

There are extensive lawns and plenty of space for the children, as well as room for cattle, sheep and horses – among the beautiful rolling hills of Barrabool.
The accommodation is great too, with an elegant and modern four-bedroom home complete with terrace, pergola and swimming pool, plus two guest studios just down a garden promenade.

Agent Matt Poustie of HF Richardson said the house was listed at $5.35 million – $5.75 million, which had generated “a phenomenal response” from local, interstate and overseas buyers.
“It is a beautiful place, with unreal views and fantastic meadows. You don’t often come across a special building like this.”
Contemporary beachfront beauty on the NSW Central Coast
Australia’s east coast is hardly short of modern beachfront mansions, but this one at 57 Ocean View Drive, Wamberal is a standout.

With six bedrooms, most with private balconies, and seven bathrooms, this sleek and luxurious home boasts three terraces, spectacular ocean views, a geothermally heated pool, a private gym, a media room – among many other impressive features.

Agent Mat Steinwede at McGrath Terrigal has withheld the target price, but his office said there was sufficient interest.
Gold Coast family amusement park
This high-tech mountain complex with uninterrupted views of the Gold Coast at 160 Tallai Road, Tallai is pure luxury, with its own theme park, Manhattan-style whiskey bar and gold-tiled infinity pool.
It has already attracted huge attention, becoming the fourth most viewed home of October, despite only hitting the market in the final days of the month.

It receives huge media attention and is home to former AFL player turned technology millionaire Brad Moran, who said he wanted to “push every boundary of what was possible” when it came to engineering and beauty.
Mr Moran and his wife Alicia bought the already striking estate for $7 million in 2021 and spent four years transforming it. The estate now features 10 bedrooms, 11 bathrooms, a 110-metre karting track, a driving range, a basketball court, a 16-seat cinema, a poker room and a wellness wing.
After all that effort, the couple and their three children chose not to enjoy it, opting instead for support, travel and homeschooling the children.

Agent Michael Kollosche said the property, which has no official guide price, had attracted interest from across the country.
“The level of detail is incredible. It’s a unique lifestyle offering and something to enjoy,” he said.
Modern townhouse in Melbourne
It is unusual in central Melbourne to find a spacious, brand new six-bedroom, seven-bathroom home on 1,136 m², with a swimming pool, full-size tennis court, gym with infrared sauna and a separate second home.

That’s why this stylish and spacious retreat at 13 Allambee Avenue, Camberwell, was snapped up for more than $8 million in just 13 days, said agent Mike Beardsley of Jellis Craig Boroondara.

“With the tennis court on the north side, the 14-metre swimming pool with a clear glass wall, large open-plan living areas with lots of natural light, plus good indoor-outdoor connectivity over two levels, it ticked many boxes for buyers,” he said.
Eco-house on the deep water
This is the beautiful seven-storey eco-home of renowned landscaper and TV personality Jamie Durie at 189 Riverview Road, Avalon Beach, famous for its chemical-free, potable pool.

As the family moves to a 30-acre farm in the Byron Bay hinterland, their spectacular home is listed with a $33 million guide.
For that you get resort-style living, cascading native gardens and breathtaking views of Pittwater. Highlights include a roof garden with century-old grass trees, a dedicated wellness zone, private beach access with a deep jetty and waterfront driveway – plus the opportunity to live off-grid with remarkably low energy bills.

Agent James Baker of McGrath Pittwater said there has been a lot of interest in the property.
“It’s a very special house, so much attention has been paid to the surroundings,” he said. “And on the upper northern beaches it is very difficult to find a house of this caliber that is completely finished – and that also has eco-sense. It is exclusive, private and literally unpack your bags and enjoy it.”
Budget-friendly starter home with construction error
A standout on this list of dream homes, this original three-bedroom, one-bathroom home on a 590sqm block at 16 Fisher Avenue, Belmont in Geelong, was the eighth most viewed home this month, with a ‘bargain’ price tag of $400,000 – $440,000.

But there was a catch: a crack in the concrete slab was identified as a fault that needed to be fixed.
The crack itself was estimated to cost between $30,000 and $40,000, but the unknown damage that would result from repairing the foundation led to the property being priced at land value.
Despite this, Hayeswinckle Geelong agent Kin Sawhney said the house attracted hordes of first-home buyers and investors before it was sold to an investor at auction for $635,000.

He said there is a huge demand for affordable housing in the area, especially given the extension of the Federal Government’s Home Guarantee Scheme from October 1.
“Anything under $600,000 gets a lot of attention, but anything under $500,000 really flies.”
