Simply put, Eala is a monumental star in the Southeast Asian country – a country with limited reputation on the tennis circuit.
Her surprise victory over six-time Grand Slam champion Iga Swiatek at last year’s Miami Open ensured Eala’s life will never be the same.
“This week there were elements that were a bit overwhelming, especially during my training,” Eala said.
“I didn’t expect there to be so many people. It’s a learning process. I’m just trying to absorb it.”
A product of Rafael Nadal’s academy in Mallorca, Eala has long been seen as a pioneer after becoming the first Filipina to win a WTA Tour match in 2021.
In 2022, she became the first to win a junior Grand Slam title with her victory at the US Open, which led to the then-teenager being featured on the cover of Vogue at home.
Veteran boxer Manny Pacquiao may still be the country’s most famous sports star, but Eala’s exploits mean she is the sporting symbol of the next generation.
“She always carries the flag and the country proudly – that’s something that resonates with everyone,” said Imee Vee, a Filipino who came especially from Sydney to watch Eala.
“She becomes a national hero. Everyone starts to stop what they are doing and watch her games. She also dominates the sports news.”
