Australian boys 2023 finalists Tien and Blockx meet again in the next generation final; Stay up to date with news I missed during IMG and Orange Bowl

Nearly three years after they met in the boys’ final of the Australian Open, top seed Learner Tien (USC) and No. 2 seed Alexander Blockx of Belgium will once again play in a major final at the Next generation ATP finals in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Tien returned to the championship match of the Next Gen Finals with a 4-2, 4-1, 4-3(3) victory over Nishesh Basavareddy. Tien, who is now 4-0 in professional matches against the former Stanford star, appears to have found his form on Wednesday after a slow start.

Blockx is undefeated this week and advances to the final with a 4-3(4), 4-3(8), 4-2 victory over Nicolai Budkov Kjaer of Norway. His serve was one of the best shots on display this week; Tien’s return on Sunday will be crucial to his success.

Their 2023 Australian Open boys final was a thriller, with Blockx emerging victorious 6-1, 2-6, 7-6 (9). I covered that match here (via ESPN streaming). That was one of three consecutive exceptional AO boys finals, with Bruno Kuzuhara beating the struggling Jakub Mensik of the Czech Republic 7-6(4), 6-7(6), 7-5 in 2022, and Rei Sakamoto of Japan beating Jan Kumstat of the Czech Republic 3-6, 7-6(2), 7-5 in 2024.

While I was in Florida, I didn’t have the opportunity to keep an eye on what else was happening in tennis as the year came to a close.

Below are several articles I came across that cover college tennis, junior tennis, or both:

The ITA has announced this the creation of an NCAA Division II Individual tournament, to be played in the fall. The host will host the Tuscaloosa Tennis Center in Alabamawho has committed to the event for three years. The NCAA Division II has not had a spring individual championship tournament in my 20 years of playing college tennis, while Divisions I and III have a long history of hosting those competitions. This is not an NCAA event, but an event organized by the ITA.
Great Britain’s Julian Cash (Mississippi State, Oklahoma State) and Lloyd Glasspool (Texas) finished the season at No. 1 in the ATP Rankings. The The BBC website provided this look in their partnership and the doubles dynasty coach that Louis Cayer has developed in Britain.
Ashleigh Barty has some advice for 2024 ITF world junior champion Emerson Jones, 17, who will play the Australian Open women’s main draw as a wildcard for the second year in a row next month.
2025 USTA National Indoor 14s champion Anna Kapanadze moved to No. 1 on the USTA National rankings after her title earlier this month and her hometown title Staten Island Progress depicted her this article.
And finally, there is a possibility of a settlement between Reese Brantmeier and the NCAA in her lawsuit, which is expected to be heard in the fall of 2026. The Carolina JournalI have the latest here.
