The online watchdog of Australia accused technical giants, including Apple and Google on Wednesday from “Close” to the material for sexual abuse of children who are shared on their platforms.
The Esafety Commission showed that Apple and video streaming site YouTube, owned by Google, did not keep the number of user reports they received about the sexual abuse of children, nor did they outlined how long it took to respond to these reports.
“When they are left to their own devices, these companies do not give a priority to the protection of children and apparently close a blind for crimes that occur on their services,” said Esafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant.
She added that technology companies had not “taken many steps to eliminate and improve their efforts” since they asked them three years ago.
“No other industry targeted by the consumer would be license to operate by making such horrible crimes against children in their buildings or services possible.”
The report also showed that companies such as Apple, Google, Microsoft and Skype did not use tools to proactively detect material for sexual abuse of children.
Technology companies must report to the committee every six months about how they approach the material of sexual abuse of children, including images generated by AI.
Inman Grant said she hoped she would see “meaningful progress”.

Australia unveiled historical laws that will prohibit the 16 years of social media at the end of 2025.
The government had previously indicated that YouTube would be exempt, given the widespread use in classrooms.
But last week it announced that the video streaming site, one of the most visited websites in the world, would also be included in the prohibition.
Companies are confronted with fines of a maximum of AUS $ 49.5 million (US $ 32 million) for non -compliance.
Civil servants still have to solve basic questions about the laws, such as how the prohibition will be checked.
