Wellington (NZ): Australia will acknowledge a Palestinian state, said PM Anthony Albanian Monday, to give in to the leaders of France, Great -Britain and Canada to indicate that they would do that. His comments followed weeks of insistence from his cabinet to recognize a Palestinian state in the midst of growing criticism of suffering in Gaza.The Australia government has also criticized that plans were announced by the Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu for a radically new military offensive in Gaza. Albanian told reporters after a cabinet meeting on Monday that Australia’s decision will be formalized in the UNGA in September. These obligations do not include a role for Hamas in a Palestinian government, demilitarization of Gaza and keeping elections, he said. Netanyahu criticized Australia and other European countries on Sunday to recognize a Palestinian state. “To have European countries and Australia march in that rabbit hole … is disappointing and I actually find it embarrassing,” he said.In the neighboring New Zealand Minister of Foreign Affairs Winston Peters said on Monday that his government “carefully weigh his position” about recognizing a Palestinian state before he makes a decision in September. “New Zealand has been clear for some time that our recognition of a Palestinian state is a matter of when, not if,” he said.
