Watson noted that every player needs some time to adapt to different scenarios and conditions. He called Gill a ‘ridiculously talented batsman’ and predicted that it won’t be long before Gill is seen as a perfectly capable batsman across all formats.
“It takes time (to make adjustments), and it’s through trial and error that you really realize exactly what you need to do to make those adjustments, and also playing in different conditions. Shubman is a ridiculously talented batsman. He has great technique. It won’t take him long at all to really be able to navigate the different formats because if someone is as skilled as he is, it won’t take him too long,” Watson said, as quoted by India today.
Watson also admitted that switching formats, as Gill has done, is not an easy task. However, he noted that more playing time under Gill’s belt will turn him into a much more comfortable zone in the near future.
“It’s definitely a challenge, and the more you do it, the more you really understand the little adjustments you have to make to your technique, your game plan and your mindset around each format to then be the best version of yourself every time you have to make that adjustment,” he added.
After a stellar five-match tour of England, in which Gill amassed 754 runs in 10 innings, it hasn’t been the smoothest of rides for him. Gill scored just 127 points in seven games India‘s title-winning Asia Cup run in the United Arab Emirates.
Coming into the ODI series against the Aussies, his scores were 10, 9 and 24. Apart from the first T20I where he remained not out on 37 off 20, Gill has failed to capitalize on his starts, scoring just 5 and 15 in the second and third T20I. The Men in Blue will play the fourth and fifth T20Is on November 6 and 8 respectively.
