Former Indian cricketer R Ashwin has come under heavy criticism against the team management for not making the choice Kuldeep Yadav in the first ODI of the three-match series against Australia on Sunday, October 19. The Men in Blue ultimately lost the rain-shortened match by seven wickets. Ashwin felt that the left-arm wrist spinner could have been a handful because of the overspin it would have generated.
“I can understand why they are playing two spinners in the game along with Nitish Kumar Reddy. They want the batting depth because both Washington and Axar can bat. But man, at least give some attention to the bowling too. If Kuldeep can’t bowl with much freedom in this big ground, where will he bowl? And there will be overspin which will also help him bounce,” Ashwin said in a video on his YouTube channel.
Ashwin felt that the batters were not contributing enough. The non-turning legend opined that Kuldeep should have been a sure part of the team in the opening match of the series.
“They’ll talk about batting depth. But if you want to build your game around batting depth, then the hitters have to take responsibility, right? The hitters’ job is to score runs. If you play an extra hitter, it’s back to shielding the hitters. How many all-rounders do you need? You already have three all-rounders. There was a time when there were no all-rounders. You’ve got Washington, you’ve got Axar, and you have Nitish This: If you still can’t play your best spinner, I don’t understand it at all,” he added.
India could only score 136/9 in their allotted 26 overs. Mitchell Marsh’s team had no trouble chasing down the target. He remained unbeaten on 46 from 52 and also earned the Player of the Match award.
