Tonight another meeting among the two Pan-American giants will take place as the National Team of the United States U-20 Women’s National Team against Argentina for the Golden Medal in the Junior Pan American Games Field Hockey Competition.

Since Pan American competitions started in the mid -1980s, the main course on the women’s side has almost always recorded the United Eagles and the Albicelestes. On no fewer than 19 occasions, the women of the two nations confronted each other for hemisferic awards at Senior or Junior levels.

This evening will be interesting in more than one aspect.

Firstly, this competition does not have as much import as last summer’s Junior Pan Cup, which qualified the United States and three other competitors in the Junior World Cup of December.

However, because this is an important competition on the Run-in of the JWC, this is a time for the young women who represent both countries to show what they can do in a powerful situation.

However, here is the thing. I’m not sure if Argentina will be a favorite team tonight. Of course, the country has a field hockey club system that is jealous in the hemisphere, but I also keep an eye on the sports culture of Argentina worldwide.

And as part of that culture, many young people play football. The national teams of Argentina play better than ever and prepare players for senior national team duty and professional game. The reach of Futbol in Argentinian culture among young women was unthinkable a generation ago, but the professionalization of the top competition of the women has given the nation a different field invasion sport as an option.

Remember this; Although Argentina leads the tournament in target score as a team to date with 22 goals, it is the Alaina McVeigh of the United States (nine) that leads all individuals in the Pan AM games. But I think that much of the fate of the states will lie in how well the defense plays for Alyssa Klebasko.

The leader of Argentina in Doelen is Milagros Alastra, who is a penalty corner specialist. All six of her goals so far are the fixed piece. Lara Casas, who played for the Albicelestes in Paris 2024, has so far has three goals in this tournament and is a clear player to watch in this game.

Should be a nice watch; Let’s see who wins this.
