It is the 28th field hockey season of this website and we have noticed that the domestic field hockey season has already begun with pre -season practices everywhere in the US.
While the actual season will start next Monday with the start of the Apple tournament in Louisville, Ky., There is today an event that can be called a ‘soft opening’ in the retail trade.
That event is a PlayDay of 16 teams in Lewes Cape Henlopen (el.) With teams from Delaware, Maryland and Virginia participating in competitions of 25 minutes.
However, you could claim that this match day is a showcase for what should be the best field hockey conference in the United States this season: the Athletic Conference Henletic Conference. Ten of the 16 schools that cross sticks today were part of the HAC.
The HAC has around 15 field hockey that plays members, many of whom have won the 20 years or are second in the Delaware State Championship. The will of Delmar, Cape Henloop, Smyrna, Indian River, Caesar Rodney and Sussex Tech have achieved the final of the state. Moreover, since 2009, no team of a conference other than the Henletic Conference has won a title of the Staatshockey title.
For a state that has the greatest diversity of field hockey school types (public, private, parochial, Christian, Quaker, technical, charter and military) in the Union, it is astonishing that the HAC has this kind of lock on Staatshonours for so long. I can’t remember another state that has this kind of dominance about state tournament game except the old South Jersey League for Lacrosse for girls when Moorestown (NJ) and Medford Lakes Shawnee (NJ) won the State Tournament every year between 1987 and 1998.
In about three months we will know which teams will compete for the Dia State Tournament Championships, but I get the feeling that many of the players who were in Cape Henlopen today will play deep in the fall and increase the championship trophy in Rullo Stadium at the University of Delaware.
